Where do you'll have your engine timing set. I have mine @ 10 BTDC. |

We are at 6000 feet above sea level. When we moved the timing in our 98 Disco from 6 to about 12 we had a huge increase in performance with no pinking. You can try move up a little until she pinks and then back off slightly. Make sure you always use the same octane fuel after this. www.worst4x4.freeservers.com |

Due to a major failure of my distributor, I had an opportunity to play with the ignition timing on my vehicle, a '95 Disco with the 3.9. Tuning by ear, I found the timing to be way advanced (boy, sounds like English is my first language, doesn't it:-). It ran great, except under hard acceleration (D'Oh). And, the mileage went away completely. After buying a new timing light, I found that I had advanced the ignition as much as 15' too far advance (~21' BTDC). after chalking the front pulley and setting the timing closer to the 6' BTDC that it was supposed to be, I found the engine to start much better, got the highest gas mileage I'd ever gotten and the pinging was gone, except under real hard acceleration under load when hot. In my experience, a modest change in ignition timing can have drastic results on performance of these engines. The ECU does a great job of controlling engine operating parameters, except for ignition timing. I'm assuming this is responsible for at least some of the sensitivity to timing. I'm surprised that there are no knock sensors to rein the fuel mixture in under pre-ignition conditions, however with no obvious direct computer control over ignition timing, this probably makes sense. FWIW, I'm at about 800 FAMSL here. Paul '95 disco |
