Hi folks, My factory cruise control in my 97 Disco SD7 is not working. It used to work, but stopped about 6 months ago. The master switch light works, but the buttons on the steering wheel don't do anything. Can someone give me some ideas of what to check? What to replace? What are all the components of the cruise control system? I'm not too savvy under the hood, so if it's not an obvious problem, or an easy part to switch out, I'll probably just take it to the dealer. Hope you can help me. Thanks Scott |

Check the vac hoses - they are cheap looking black rubber hoses, about 5mm dia. I think two go to the brake pedal and are connected to the auto-disarm switch, which is triggered when you depress the pedal. The other end is in the upper right hand corner of your engine compartment, it attaches to the the actual vac system for the CC. If you are disconnected at either spot you have no CC. If your light comes on when you push the master, and if you hear clicking when you try to engage at the steering wheel, then that is probably the problem. In the engine, cut about 1/2 inch off the end, and reconnect. do not cut too much off or it will not reach. Under the dash, by the pedal, probably the same. Not sure about that though. If you have any more questions you can email and I could probably send you pictures or clarify more. http://landrover.mrbaileyshistory.net |

By "Upper Right" do you mean as I am facing it or driving it? Drivers side or passenger side? Thanks |

Sorry, as you are facing it with the hood open. The vac looks like a small 3" dia UFO turned on it's side with a cable and the cheap vac hose coming out of the top. http://landrover.mrbaileyshistory.net |

Hi, I just trimmed about 1/2" off each end of the hose at the vacuum pump, all connections at the "T" and the connection at the throttle. The only place I didn't trim (couldn't see it) was under the dash by the pedal. Still no cruise control. FYI, I get no clicking or sucking or whirring sound that I used to get when this worked. The master light switch still comes on, so I suspect that I have some kind of electrical problem. What do you recommend that I try next? Could it be that the vacuum pump is dead? |

Try the cruise control switch at the brake pedal. It is what turns the cruise off when you hit the brakes. I replaced this switch it solved my problem. |

Brian -- when it wasn't working, could you hear if your pump was clicking or whirring? |

On my 96 and 97 both cruises did not work, about a month ago. One vac line fell off and the other was split at the end. Easy fixes. |

My 95 did the same thing when one vac line was split on the end. I cut and refit the hose and ta-dah we have Cruise!! |

If it is not the fuse (your master comes on, but check anyway.) And it is not the vac hoses, then it could be a bigger problem. Probably electircal. http://landrover.mrbaileyshistory.org |

My cruise went out just a couple of weeks ago. My master switch still worked so I guessed on the stearing wheel switch first. It cost about $35 from British Atlantic. After replacing it, I took the old apart and found that behind the set button there is a tiny little copper diaphram that works like a spring on the circuit board. this wears out and just goes flat, killing the switch. Words of warning!!! When removing the switch, you have to remove the airbag. DO NOT DISCONNECT the harness. Remove the bolts that hold the cradle in place and work around it. Good Luck! |

enzo -- sounds like something worth trying this weekend. Do you have any other tips? I've never taken apart the steering wheel, so not sure where to start. Also, can you recommend a way to test and see if the switch is bad. Can I cross some wires somewhere? I'm OK with tools, not advanced. Appreciate any advice. Thanks, Scott |

To whoever recommended that I check the connection at the vacuum pump --- THANKS. That was the problem. The 3-prong plug that plugs into the vacuum pump had jiggled loose. |
