My wife has been dying for one for a while now, and we test drove a 99 at a dealer today, and wow, great truck. We also took out the D2, but I really didn't like it. Too car like. If i want to drive a car, I'll take out my convertible. So anyway, I've heard a lot of good and a lot of bad about all the years. Our price range is up to around 21-22k, but I also wouldn't mind spending under 10K for a 94-95.

We travel by car alot, and love to camp/hike, and I'm really looking forward to seeing what this thing can do. i loved testing my Jeep Grand Wagoneer and we had a blast getting it all muddy, so we don't intend on using it as a soccer mom mover if that helps.

I'm pretty handy, so i don't mind fixing the annoying leaks that plague Rovers, so anyway, if anyone has any thoughts I'd really appreciate it.

Thanks

Zak

The later the model, the higher the reliability. Land Rover kept improving the D1 throughout it's life. 94-95 had the a distributor and the 3.9 engine. They introduced the 4.0 engine and GEMS in 96. From what I've heard, transmission, transfer case, body, axles all stayed pretty much the same for the entire run of the D1.

Thanks,
Mike B.

The 99 model year is by far the most reliable Series I. Get the newest you can afford (and at that budget you should be able to get a fully loaded 99.) You'll also have the most warranty then.

FWIW: I just received my new (to me) '98 D1 with 58k on the clock. The dealership certified the vehicle which gave me a free 12 month warranty and an additional 12 or 24 are available to me. Just my .02

Ya a 99 with less than 50k would be ideal. Then get everything fixed before it goes out of waranty and/or get an extended. 98 and below will be out unless they had an extended waranty.

20k should buy you a nice certified one from a dealer

Bought a 99 D1 w/38k (non-certified) and love it. Convertible now pouts in the garage. All of the certifieds with sunroofs were running around 24k here in Houston.

19,900 at Land Rover Main Line for one with 49,800 :) 20,900 for one with under 30,000 miles (thing is pristine)

but no roofs on the ones in stock, trust me though you don't want roofs :)

Lots of them are coming in the dealers now as they are 3-year lease ends so you should have a good choice. If only a woodcote one would show up.

why wouldn't you want one with roofs? They are small but at least they don't leak.

"but at least they don't leak."

Oh from the mouths of babes. They leak, they rattle, they make the roof rack noise louder, they decide one day not to close etc etc etc.

Ron, do the roof problems seem to start up at a certain age? Like at 50k or 4 yrs and a day?!

LOL Mary!

I would say about 3 days old and 2 miles is when they start :)

I am sure your disco is a good disco and will have good roofs (provided they are never opened :))

I guess roofs are nice but to me it is just one (well two) more things that will break and tick me off.

Well, I bought my first Rover in Dec. Either a 98/99 for around $20 or 94/5/6 for around $10. I bought a nice 95 for $10k. I liked the simplicity of the old 3.9 and OBDI. As I enjoy turning wrenches (to a degree) and this was an additional car, paying 2x the cost to get a warranty wasnt worth it to me, I've also had bad luck getting warranty items honored. This way, when my $10k 95 breaks, I just pay out of pocket, but at $10k, I have that much more cash to cover it. No regrets, and each month it doesnt need work, I love that small payment...and dont mind to get the trail dings.

I have a 97 that has no leaks or anything and is in great condition. There is rust under the alpine windows, but that is getting taken care of on Tuesday of next week. It has just under 100,000 miles on it, so I am doing a major tune up this summer. It is for sale, as I found a 110 I really like, but can't get it until I sell my Disco. Check out the pics on this sight.
I use it for camping and trail riding and carrying my kayaks all over the east coast, and absolutely LOVE it!
Let me know if you are interested.

I'm kind of in the same mindset as Roger, might buy an older one for around 10k, bank the money on the months that I don't have to fix anything and just get the things fixed or fix it my self when anything goes wrong. How hard are Disco's to work on? What should I look out for on them?

Greg, nice Disco!! How much are you asking, and where on hte east coast are you located? I like in Eastern PA, in Bucks county.

ALso, does anyone know of any good dealers in the area? I've been tothe one in Princeton, and i'm pretty close to the one in Willow Grove. And advise is greatly appreciated.

Thansk,

Zak

My wife is now dying for one, so we'll probably stop by the Main Line Dealer tonight and check out their D1's that they have. They also have a nice 94, for $9400. That looks good to me.

Get one with sunroofs!!! That way when all your other windows stop working, at least you'll be able to breathe. hehehe

96 SE7 - windows not working, rear door not opening, 02 sensors crapping out, cruise control just went, clock is manic depressive, pees out boiling hot water when AC is on...

...anyone want to buy it? :)

Zak, i must admit that any year LAND ROVER is better than anything else new. i own a 94 and other than a few minor repairs i had to make it has been a very reliable (knock on wood) truck. it looks good, runs good and is a blast in the woods. IMHO

I have a 1995 Disco w/ only 56000 miles. For the most part, it has been a great SUV. Only in the past few months it has been having problems. For instance, the seals/gaskets are going bad and I just replaced the fuel tank for a gas leak. And like any British product, it leaks oil and lots of it! It also has developed some vibrations and squeks that I can't seem to diagnose. But I still love the car, I do plan on selling it towards the end of the year though...and what will replace it, you ask...a 1998-1999 Discovery. I agree, a wise upgrade would be the extended warrenty, because these vehicles aren't exavtly cheap to maintain. Good luck on your search.

Thanks again for all the input. You guys/gals have really helped me out a lot.

On a scale of 1-10, how hard are these things to work on? I also have a 92 miata, and that thing is a piece of cake to fix, and I love working on it.

Ron, I'll be emailing you.

Thanks once again.

Zak...
They aren't hard at all to work on at all. Parts are easier than lots of American car parts to get, since they are imports and there are lots of Rover Specialty Mail-Order-type-places (Atlantic British, Rovers North, Etc.) They can ususlly have any part you need to you in 1 day.
I am not mechanically inclined at all, and have had no problems fixing things. If I couldn't do it, I took it to my local garage, and they did it up right.
As I mentioned, mine is for sale. I found a D-110 that I really really need, and convinced my wife that she likes it, too.
I am asking $15,000 locally, here in Myrtle Beach, but would go a little cheaper here on the D-Web. It has a new clutch, all new seals and gaskets, and doesn't lose a drop of oil (any more). I am just about to give her a major tune up, as it is just under the 100,000 mile mark. The only problem with it is that it has a bad injector. I am replacing that when I do the tune-up.
These things are a pleasure to drive. They are virtually unstoppable. I love it, and I love the looks I get when I am in it.
Let me know if you are interested.
I would even consider driving it closer to you. Or you could take a nice family vacation down here to Myrtle.

1-10 I would say a 3. Series rover would be a 1. Not hard at all. Way easier than a miata. Plus you can get to everything underneeth.

Look forward to your email

There's a new wrench in the works now. We went to Main Line Rover, and looked at a few Disco I's, but also started thinking about a late year 99 Disco II's. On our way home we stopped by Willow Grove LR and test drove a 99 Disco II. Very nice ride. Only down side is that it didn't make it over the test "track" as well as the D1. But they're a little out of our price range, but they have a fantastic ride and I kind of like the extra room it provides. Oh well, another decision to make.

It was great meeting you both Alyssa and Ron.
