Gentlemen and Ladies: I have finally decided to begin the arduous process of replacing the rest of the stereo in my Disco. I have a Kenwood head unit and stock amplifiers and speakers. I would like to replace the amplifier first and then, I'll worry about speakers, subwoofer, etc. I'd like to stay with the Kenwood. Anybody have any suggestions for which amplifier I should go with? What is the output of the original amp? My head unit is rated at 40 watts per channel. I'm wondering if I'd be better off just wiring the head unit directly to the speakers, rather than buying a new amplifier. Anybody got any comments for me? peace, Paul |

Paul, You can wire the head unit directly to the speakers, but you lose the rear subs (or find out some other way to use them). After having driven around for about a year with only the four speakers, I can attest that the sound quality is much worse than with the rear subs through the amp. Thanks to David Dryden, I just finished hooking up the aftermarket head unit to the stock amp again. The lack of bass was driving me nuts. |

You only lose rear subs if you don't use the factory amp. The subs get signal from amp( I don't mean remote I mean actual signal. If you take to good shop(car audio) they could wire in rear subs, even if you remove front amp. Amp (if you can call it that) for subs are in back door. By the way I own OK car audio shop. Good luck ! |

Realistically, the stock Disco amp is probably just as capable, if not more so, than the built in amp on most head units. If you're upgrading in steps (as most of our budgets will allow!), then I would either add a five channel amp and subwoofer, OR change the front and rear speakers. IMHO, adding the amp AND sub will give you the most noticeable improvement. The front and rear stock speakers are "decent" and sound much better when used with a good amp and crossover. The factory subs being installed inside the rear door are not in a very good enclosure and are very limited in what they can do, even with more power. You could also consider adding a powered sub (i.e., Infinity, Bazooka, etc.), but you'll have to use the head units amp or add another outboard amp to power the four corners. Let me know if you need more info! David |
