Would it even do anything to help traction is I put a traction diff in without a CDL. Newb question.>JB

If you do not have a CDL (the ability to lock the transfer case) and you have the stock (open) differentials in the front and rear, then basically you have a one wheel drive vehicle. The power will all go to the one wheel with the least traction. With a CDL, you are now forcing the power to split between the front and rear axles. If you still have the open diffs in the axles, all the power to that axle (50% of total) will go to the wheel with the least traction. By adding a limited slip or traction control device to the axle, you now shift the majority (not necessarily all) of the power to the wheel with the most traction. So to have true four wheel drive, you need a CDL and lockers or limited slips in both axles. In answer to your question, yes. By upgrading your axles, you will get significant traction improvement. However, if both wheels of one axle are in a slimy mud pit and are spinning furiously, no power will be sent to the other axle. Hope that helps.

ETC would help put the traction to the wheels that grip, but this will overwork the ETC and it will end up giving out during the day. You will never get all wheels spinning, or even 3 like you would if you had CDL.

'cross-axled' situations is where I find myself getting stuck and it looks like unless you locked all around your gonna have a slippery situation. Is that about right?.>JB

The CDL will make a BIG difference. I have a 99 Dll. I know it will be expensive to convert your 02, but I highly recommend it. I lost my ETC when I was in Mexico last year and I would have been sucking hind tit if I didn't have the CDL.

Is there any reason to think the stock DII 24 spline axels won't handle a TT set up?
