Muskyman,

What suspension setup do you have? You must be subjecting your Bilsteins to some wierd stresses at the limits.

I have over 80,000 miles on mine with no problems. They work great for the twisty pavement I drive and I don't have any problems with them off-road.

stock truck

LR HD springs

the shocks that have failed have all been the b46-0253 bilstein says its the right shock

I say its too short.

never the less I'm pitching the rears lock stock and barrel and fabbing my own ....

I carry alot of weight in my truck all the time and dont baby it in chicago construction ,the bottom stud is the weak link.

beat it till it breaks then fix it better

its at the fix it better stage

Actually the CORRECT Bilstein part numbers for a D1 are as follows:

FRONT: b46-0243
REAR: be5-2779

Here's the link from bilstein's site:

I have never had a problem with Bilstein. It looks like that broken shock was the wrong one for the truck. I had LR HD springs from Rovers North and that (the broken one) does not look like the Bilstein # they sold me for that lift.

the pre 94 build change and any range rover or any truck running the factory HD springs are suposed to take the B46-0253 according to bilstein

my truck is a 94 with a serial number before the build change and I have the HD springs

the 0253 are 10mm longer then the Be5-2779 so I would think that I would be topping out the 2779 worse then the 0253?

I am deffenetly breaking them from topping them out to hard. I have checked all my bushings to see if I'm moving in any other directions and they all seam to be ok.

I think the heavy loads I carry combined with aggresive driving is more then the bilstein stud can take..the shock is the limiting factor and that is never good.

Better the shock than something less easily replaced/repaired/improved, eh?

yeah paul, thats' the theory of some other shock manufacturers.... "you should be glad the shocks broke, imagine replacing/fixing the shock mount"

fix it?

how about cut it off?

actually the mounts are really well done and why fight a good place to bolt to

just need to trim it a little

the top mounts are really beefy IMHO.

shocks shouldent break ,if they are done correctly they should never bottom or top out.

I just need to redo the bottom mount and put a slightly longer shock on it and be done.

losing a little ground clearence right next to the tire is not a big deal for me
