Hello all, my power steering has been intermittently (sp?) going out, 99.9% of the time it is at interstate speed. If I pull off the road and shut down the engine, and tap the hoses to/from the power steering pump with a screwdriver or something, problem is solved. My Disco is creeping up on 110k, and I've owned it since 93k 6 months ago. Is it a possibility that the p.s. fluid with the exception of what I added thinking that to be a solution, is gumming up inside the hoses and/or pump? If the p.s. pump was going out, it wouldn't just go randomly would it? I'm confused and at a loss for words.. any help would be greatly appreciated.. RS |

Did you use power steering fluid or Dexron III???? If you used power steering fluid that might be a prob. -jeff |

Try draining it and replacing with new fluid. Don't use ps fluid, do a search and you'll see that it should be replaced with ATF Dexron IID or M2C 33 (F or D). |

Used power steering fluid to top it off when the problem first occured, so basically the problem started before that. I suppose that I will drain the fluid, any instructions for a layman such as myself to drain out the fluid and refill with Dexron? |

I used a syringe to suck mine out instead of draining from below (turkey baster or antifreeze hydrometer would probably work). |

After you clean out the reservoir you really should empty the whole system. Does any body know the specific gravity of the two fluids or if they will mix???? If they are immissable and they have different SG's then they will seperate and you might get all of it off the top of the reservoir after it has been at rest for a while (that assumes that the PSFluid is lighter, which might not be true). Problem is, I can't say how long "a while" is so it seems safer to just dump the whole thing and start over fresh. There is a thread near the top right now on replacing the power steering hoses, that describes the fill and bleed process. good luck. -jeff |
