Hello Disco Web!
I wanted to thank everyone for writing so much information on this site that is helpful to new Land Rover owners. I've really enjoyed perusing the site and storing your hints for future use.

So..on to my question.
I have just recently purchased a 95 D1 with 59000 miles and at this point in time...only one thing is wrong with the truck: the front windshield washers don't work. The wipers work, and the rear wiper/wash combo works, but nothing comes from the reservoir to the glass. I have tried checking the tube lines, made sure the nozzles were not obstructed, etc. And it doesn't seem like it's pumping when you activate the front switch. Any suggestions? Is this something I can fix on my own?
Just last week my cruise control was not working, but I was very excited to learn that only a vacuum hose had become disconnected. Reeling from the "I fixed it high" I would love to be able to wash the window!!

I have loved these vehicles for years and had to wait a long time to purchase one. Now I'm going to enjoy her and hope to even join a local Owner's club or something. Any information about Rover groups in VA?

Thanks,
S

Check your fuse and also make sure you have power going to the pump.

Susannah,

When you activate the front w/s washers can you hear the pump motor running? If so, then it's probably a faulty anti-siphon valve or clogged line near the reservoir. If you don't hear the pump running, check the pump on the reservoir. There are 3 of them! (front, rear, headlight washers) I don't remember which one is which, although I seem to remember the middle one is for the headlights. You should be able to figure it out by just looking at it. You'll probably find it's easier to check by removing the reservoir from its mounting. Be forwarned though, there are four bolts holding the tank in place. Two on top and two that are accessable from inside the wheel well. The ones in the wheel well are are probably rusted, so soak them good with solvent first. I ended up havning to cut mine with a Dremel tool (of course, they were replaced with stainless steel!). Let us know what you find out. Good luck!

David

It sounds like the little pump is not getting power or it's dead. It could be the switch on the column too. If the lines are blocked you blast them out with compressed air, but you should hear the pump trying when you activate it. You could try jumping the power (with a short wire) to the pump from the battery and see if it's the pump or the power to the pump.

One thing I do sometimes is have the dealer diagnose the problem but not fix it. This is often a one hour charge and thats it. Then I fix it.

Good Luck.

If you can't hear a whirring sound, the pump's probably dead. They're cheap little bastards. You have to remove the reservoir (two bolts from under the wheel well and two near the windshield) and pull out the pump. All you have to do is remove the wire harness and plug the clear hose onto the new pump. Make sure you order the right part, as it has changed. It has a 90 degree bend into the reservoir. They cost about $35 from Discount rovers.

Hey 'Bender'
I was in Waynesboro last weekend too! But unfortunately, I wasn't playing with my Rover. I'll check out the webpages and see if I can get involved. I haven't modified my vehicle though...
Thanks for the info!

S - no need to modify! All i did was remove the factory side step rails which took all of 10 minutes. The Xterra and Jeep guys were *REALLY* impressed at stock disco capability. I must admit that I was surprised myself!

I'm even running stock tires with 30% tread!

Then I will look forward to running my 95 stock on some trips to see how she handles. Luckily, the guy who sold her to me put brand new Michelins on it before I took ownership! That should help. Any idea when the next trip might be? I'm hoping to get her out in the mountains this weekend...

By the way...about my windshield washers....
Daivd, thanks for warning me about the 4 bolts. We had tried to remove the res but only saw the upper two!! I have discovered that it must be the pump..there is no sound when the column switch is activated. I'll try to further diagnose and hope to be able to fix the problem myself. I've never ordered from 'Discount Rovers' though. I have ordered a few things from Rover Connection.com and found their service excellent. I'll see what they have!
Thanks again to all.

S - good luck this weekend! We entered the trail head about 5 miles off of the Sherando Lake exit (waynesborgh off I-64). This trail eventually leads back to the BRP ... from there its about 8 miles to CrabTree Falls trail which takes you down the mountain and spits you out somewhere near Wintergreen.

Good luck and have fun!
