For those you you who were visiting EE and were following the thread, I installed the seat heater elements in my 2001 DSII. Took about 1.5 hours per seat.

Currently working on a web page write-up for the installation.

I wrote up some instructions on installing the seat heater elements.

They are on my website here

so do we think that SEs (with leather) have the heating elements in them already and just the SDs (with vinyl) are lacking the elements? Or is it just random? Anyone have a SII SD with the elements already? What year? Anyone have an SII SE without the elements?

It is my understanding that the leather seats already have the heater elements installed.

Koby,
Did anyone you spoke with during your heated seat research ever mention installing heated seats in a DI?

It is random. It's a Land Rover.
We've even seen Discoverys that are supposed to have the Cold Climate Package come through with heated seat switches and no elements in the seats.
Leather seats are more likely to have the elements, but there's no guarantee. Also, you'll find with 2002 models that there is much less likelihood that cars that don't have CCP are equipped with the elements. Perhaps Ford is making Land Rover act efficiently????

FWIW, my '99 Disco SD (Series I), leather interior, has heated seats....

bryan-

I did not speak to anyone with a DI regarding heater elements. I imagine the instructions are not that much different, although the part numbers for the elements will be different.

FWIW,

My 98 Series I LSE has heated seats too. I'm located in Canada. I don't think there's a cold climate package for 98 unless someone can verify. A heated windshield would be nice but I don't think I have one.

Do I hear a '97?

Hope this helps,
Santo

For those of you who don't have heated seats white castle hamburgers do the same thing for a lot less coin! Takes about as long as the heater element to heat up, but gets just as hot! Also, the install takes a lot less time and is much more fun!!! Good Luck.

No White Castle establishments in the Pacific Northwest, so I guess that's not an option

Charles-

Thanks! I hope the photos help. The installation was really much easier than I thought, so you should be in good shape. Call Nathan Crabtree for your heater elements. He got me a great price on the heater elements.

r0ver4x4- It depends on your year and make. I can only speak for 2001 DSII.

Just to clear this up-- the same seats are used in all Series II discoveries- be they SD or SE Or LE models. That said, all LEATHER SEATS have the heating elements in them from the factory. This was a simple manuver by Land Rover as they knew many people would be doped into having the heated seats installed at their dealers for circa 260 dollars. If you have leather seats than you have heated elements and all you need is a 35 dollar kit from roverconnection.com. ALL FYI

Did they do heated seats in the 95 Discovery or was that later?

Heated seats weren't available on any Discoverys until 1997.

Alyssa, I pulled the window switch plate on my 95 and found cut-outs for two additional switches. Any idea what they would be for?

According to Alyssa, heated seats weren't an option until 97.

Does that mean the 97 came pre wired with the elements?

Don't forget to take a look at EE.com's discussion on this topic as well. It covers some things to look for when trying to determine if your seats are heater element equipped.
