My Disco 3,9 auto -96 has a high frequency whine from the engine area when the engine is under load and reaches above 3000 rpm, it then increases in strength as rpms go up. Typically it happens at kickdown when overtaking and going up long hills when transmission shifts down. Actually it has been there since I got the disco over three years ago, but never really thougth it was serious and it has stayed the same, but on a recent trip my friends commented on the noise and suggested it could be the autobox?? My own thougths has been in the line of a vacuum leak or some other airflow related sound. Anyone had similiar noise? Thanks, T |

very common. either it is your T-case whine or some interference through the radio. if you turn off the radio and it is gone then there you have it. but if not it sounds like the typical transfer case whine. ps: if it is a '96 it's a 4.0. |

Could also be a bearing starting to go south - check for noise at the alternator, idler pulley and water pump bearings - those are the most common to go. Bill |

I have the same problem, I have read other threads on here that say it's a fairly normal occurence and is not an indication of a problem. Also, it's pretty tough to check misc. bearing spots in the engine when you are sitting in the cockpit with your foot mashed to the floor getting the transmission to kick down. The thing that best describes this noise is a "turbo-like" whistling when you get it in to passing gear. It's certainly not a radio interference noise. And mine doesn't sound as if it's coming from the trans. Again, other threads have said that it is common, so I don't think you're headed for disaster. Garrett is probably right with the t-case theory. |

Thanks for the response! Well, it's not coming through the speakers, checked that already. I have the normal T-case whine as well but it normally reaches it's peak around 90-100 km/h also it seems more dependent on road speed than engine speed. The "turbo-like" whistle is a spot-on description of the sound, so I'll just go back to my previous attitude and try to ignore the sound. Actually it almost adds a little sporty touch to the "acceleration" at kick down... Since I'm soon leaving for long trip, I will check on the bearings before, I guess it's better to both listen with a screwdriver at idle and to remove the belt and feel for roughness and play. PS. gp, since I'm in europe my -96 has a 3,9 since it wasn't until disco II we got the 4,0 over here. / T |

T, I just tell all my friends that it IS the turbo kicking in, they are pretty impressed.... |
