I have a 96 Disco with 91k on it and I am experiencing a strange dry wheezing noise just before the engine rotates to a stop after turning off the ignition.

Occasionally, the noise occurs intermittently at idle although not very often. The noise seems be coming from inside the plenum chamber. I suspect either a bad intake manafold gasket or vacuum leak is responsible. However, I have not noticed the associated oil or water leaks which usually accompany a bad gasket. Any tips and/or advice anyone could offer would be most appreciated.

Thanks.

My disco was making a strange wheezing, almost honking noise right before the water pump gave up the ghost.

Another guess might be the P/S pump - try to locate the noise with a long screwdriver or pipe placed to your ear. Be careful of belts, fans, etc!

Good luck

I'm going to suggest the water pump is going bad. Mine did the same thing, funky squeaking, wheezing noise when the engine is shut off and sometimes at idle, gradually increasing with time and more noticeable when the outside temp was on the rise. Take a screwdriver to the water pump and see if you hear the noise when the engine is shut off.

You know, I have heard what I think you are referring to, but just like you said, only when I turn the engine off. Those last few engine rotations after ignition is off sounds like its wheezing and as soon as the engine stops, the wheezing goes away.
What I attribute that sound to is the belt. Why? Since the only time this happens is when I clean my engine after a muddy run. The wheezing episodes stop after a week or so, until the next time I clean.

Just a guess but the occurrence is associated with cleaning and immediately thereafter for a week or so.
