Changed oil about 300 miles ago with 10w40 (pretty sure, non-dealer LR mechanic changed oil while performing transfer case re-seal). Lately on startup after sitting overnight or for an hour or so I get 1 or 2 seconds of clackety clack sound that quickly goes away as oil starts to flow. Would adding some of that Lucas Oil Stabilizer take care of this, or is this a sign of terrible things to come?

Change your oil filter right NOW. The backflow preventer is probably bad. Go and get a genuine filter. If it corrects the problem, stay with the genuine filter for now. Cheap filters (like FRAM) don't work well on a Disco. That damn V8 is really sensitive to oil issues.

Let us know if this corrects the problem. Beyond that I've READ that it could be a clogged pickup in the oil pump (semi-rare) or a failing oil pump (rare).

Thanks,
Mike B.

I have a new factory filter on the shelf in my garage so a swap can be done tonight. But it would replace a brand new factory filter installed 300 miles ago. Faulty new filter?

Seems odd that a genuine filter is bad, but not out of the question. I've had a few filters with bad backflow valves (although not on my Rover). Also, the seal on the filter could be bad or the filter may have not been installed properly. Replacing it gets you past all that.

I'm guessing that you are pretty handy mechanically. So if you still have a problem after replacing the filter, I'd suggest you drop the oil pan to inspect the oil pickup. It could be partially clogged. Sometimes after re-sealing the oil pan with the liquid gasket stuff, some of the surplus 'globs off' (sorry, don't know the technical term) and gets down in the oil pan and partially clogs the oil pickup.

After that you are beyond me. I don't know how to measure the oil pressure, that that would probably be the next step.

The problem that worries me the most about oil related issues is that it seems that you have very little time to correct a small problem before it becomes a big problem (i.e. a total engine rebuild).

Thanks,
Mike B.

Is there a product out there designed to break up clogged pickup screens?

Well, I checked at home and I have the right filter (I suppose all V8's use the LR ERR3340 filter) so I will swap the one in place for the newest one tonight and see what happens.

Ron,

Dumb question: Have you always used 10w40?

When I bought my truck, It did a lifter clatter on startup after sitting overnight. I have no idea what oil was in it, or how old it was--the filter was genuine. (and the price of the truck so low that I was OK with a loose engine risk)

I changed the oil--put in 10w40. The lifter clatter was still there. Now I take it to a shop for work (I'm lazy), the last change was with the shop's preferred Valvoline 10w30. The clatter has been gone ever since.

I am no oil loyalist--I could care less about the brand (no matter what it is, it's coming back out really soon anyway!), but if 10w30 is the weight my truck likes, it will get it. Thus far, no rattles and no consumption.

I ran 20w50 until a LR tech said it was too thick, go with 10w40. I assume 10w40 is in there now since the technician who told me this is the guy who has changed the oil the last few times.

I plan to change it out tomorrow (oil and filter) and see what happens. I hate spilt oil on my driveway, anyone got a good method of avoiding the nasty, messy stuff (besides having Grease Monkey do it?)

Just get one of those big round tubs and slide it underneath, make sure you wear rubber gloves. You'll spill a little from the filter, but if your tub is under, no problems.

ron

try going back to the 20w 50 ,if you have a buncha miles those bearing tolorences may need the thicker film strength of the 20w50 to prevent the oil from leaching out during long periods of sitting.

and yes the lucas may help the clatter. it has helped the noise in a bunch of cars that i'v owned that had high miles.

the fact that your problems started after a change in oil and filter makes me think its either a bad filter or just a really worn motor that needs the thicker oil.

as far as oil being to thick..it really needs to be a high rpm motor to cause oil starvation due to overly high viscosity, I know proffesional mud boggers that run 20w50 in brand new motors just for the added protection under super heavy loads they incur.

how many miles are you at in your disco?

Musky,

Just rolled 70,000 miles but the PO gave me warranty history from LR showing the top end was rebuilt (heads resurfaced) about 30,000 miles ago (under warranty) along with a new oil pump and some other goodies (also under warranty). I'm not using a drop of oil and the engine runs smooth as silk.

So I've heard 20w50 and 10w30. Confused now.
