The brakes on my 96 D1 are doing some strange things. Most of the time they are fine, but a few days ago I went several mile down a long curving road and at the bottom I could not stop, the tires did not lock up, the pedal faded to the floor. I assumed I heated up the brakes coming down the mountain and thought no more of it. Since then every now and then it will do the same thing, even during normal driving on flat roads. The abs light now stays on. Any idea what may be going on?

Jeff - with the truck off and stationary - try this:

press very hard on the brake pedal and hold for 30 seconds or more - if the pedal sinks that is a good indicator that the MC is going bad. If so, very quick and easy to replace on a disco.

Could be other things, but I'd try that first. Also, how are your basics like rotor thickness, pad thickness, fluid level, and how old is the fluid?

Thanks Bill

It turns out the shop said it was the rear pads. I was afraid it was the abs pump or the MC.
