Not sure which one to go for. I can find some higher mileage 99 DII's for a little more than a bit lower mileage D1's for about just a little more. Test drove both of them, and love them both. Are the DII's as capable off road? We intend to use it a bit and see what it can do. Thanks, Zak |

Zac, Having only slight 4-wheeling experience compared to some of the guys on this board, I will give you my opinion, take it for what it is worth: I think that for the person who will only be doing some light 4-wheeling, the DII with traction control is probably the better choice. If you plan on getting into it a bit more, then I say the DI since it has the cdl, and is more easily modified with a larger aftermarket. I have a DI and love it, but I have driven a DII, and that traction control system is pretty impressive right out of the box. However, I think once you get into a DI with lockers, suspension, tires, etc. you certainly have a more capable vehicle. All depends on what you intend to do and what you intend to spend. I do know that some people don't like the larger size of the DII offroad. Makes it tough to get into tight places with extra width and less forgiving approach angles and such. -Marc |

That CDL is KEY!!! A HUGE benefit. The Disco II has one too, you just can't access it from inside the cabin. They DO sell kits that let you do just that though. In the meantime, after a few minutes of tinkerimg the first time, you CAN engage the CDL on the Disco II's by hand whenever you happen to go offroad and need it. After the first time doing that, it gets SUPER easy!! For the most part, the 2 trucks are awesome and very similar......mostly cosmetic differences. I have a 98 Disco I and absolutely LOVE it!!! However, I would like a Disco II for the cool cosmetic differences, but I would certainly miss having hat CDL right at my disposal!! |

If you do get a Disco II get a 1999 or 2000 since they can be upgraded to have the CDL linkage to engage it from within the vehicle. Some of the 2001's and all 2002's don't have CDL at all. FWIW, CDL with ETC is very good. And you can still add a locker to a Disco II if you need it. |

From my experiance with our D2, I would avoid a 99 D2 if you are of larger build. The '00 & '01 have more tilt and a slightly lower seat for fat asses like myself to be more comfy sitting in. It was the only thing I didnt like about our 99 D2 and really pu tthe brakes on fixing it up for off road duty. For "out of the show room straight to better trails", my choice is a D1. still not sure as to which one we want. I like the added room and the pickup in the D2, but like the better "out of hte box" off road ability of the D1. So still not sure. I'm about 6'0" and 250, so I'll have to check out the added roomer seat on the 00's. I didn't notice it being a problem on hte 99 D2 that we drove. heck, if i can fit comfortably in our Miata, i think i can squeeze myself in to a Disco. Thanks again for the info, this place is a great resource. Zak |

Hey Zak, I think you will be happy either way. Personally I think from a reliability standpoint a 99DI is just a little better than a 99DII, but on road there is no question the DII is nicer. Offroad I would take a DI but a DII with CDL puts you on the same level really quick. My advice is to get which one feels right for you, both will do an excelent job getting you whereever you need to go. Ron |

Ron's right. It's realy just personal preference. I drive a Disco II and love it. It is an exelent vehicle and takes whatever I dish out. I sometimes wish though, that the ass wasn't as long. The Disco I's ass is about 6 inches shorter. If I had it all to do over again, I'd buy the same thing, I just wish I could have both! |

Hell Yeah, Go DII
After talking to Ho and John, I have to get a CDL kit for my '00. I just have to. |

You might want to take a look at the disco2owners group at Yahoo. We just did a poll on CDL options, pretty interesting results. |

I'm in the same spot, been looking at early DII's but the savings on a used DI is tempting. What I'm concerned about is reliability, what is the perceived difference between the two series? Will I be spending the money I saved buying a DI on repairs instead of 4X upgrades? Thanks. |

I've got a '00 DSII with almost 44K miles. Other than scheduled services and the few minor recalls done during the services, I have had absolutely zero problems. As far as capability, I have had no problems going where DSI's go. I have added a CDL lever to mine. That combined with the ETC makes a very impressive combination. It's not the same as mechanical lockers (which I'm getting ready to install), but to me it's better than just the CDL with no ETC. You can see my other mods in the gallery. |

I'm 6'4" and I can gurantee you the DI is roomier for the driver and the front passenger. The DII has more cargo room and more room for the rear passengers. However, the rear passenger room was gained by moving the front seats forward a notch IMO. Or maybe it's that the seats are bigger but the DII cockpit is tighter for sure. I prefer DI. I even like the suspension design on the DI better than on DII. The 2 vehicles may be similar but they're quite different in my opinion. Now stick the Bosch EFI on the DI engine and you have best of both worlds. Or better yet how bout that cheby conversion? |

I'm 6'4" as well and have no problems. Drive them both and your heart will tell you which is best for you. I can say that the bigger ass sure holds more stuff, and with the proper mods (hint, hint), the overhang problem can be overcome. |

Seems people always knock that big ass, but I'm sure there's someone who likes em large. Milan, why do you prefer the D1 engine? From a driver (non-mechanic) standpoint, I feel they could both use a few more horses. chu |

Greg, Maybe you're slimmer than me.;) In reality, I can fit in both also but I have more room in DI. The difference is enough that even my much smaller wife noticed it all on her own. chu, I was just hinting that I prefer the DII engine management and FI. I think the DI engine could be made just as good as the DII with better intake and fuel mgmt. But like you say both could benefit from some HP increase. Hence my Chevy remark (and I actually am not a Chevy fan). |

Don't get me wrong, the ass can be fixed. $G has a nice solution, but I might make my own, probably be much cheaper. The cargo room really is impressive on the Disco II. Now if I can finish the plans on my rear seat quick releases... |

The d1 shares the same full floating axles, transfer case and suspension components as the defender. Because of the CDL both front and rear axles have to be capable of handling all the torque the engine can transmit. The engine torque is substantial especially in low range, combined with the torque multiplication which occurs in the automatic transmission torque converter. This is why engine power upgrades are always soooo conservative with a full time 4x4 CDL. The 90's version of the Toyota Land Cruiser had the same issue - hence the underated 4.0 straight six. Toyota went with a visc fluid coupling the same time they switched to the more powerfull V8 engine. Major step towards the luxury customer. Rover switched to lighter Axles on the D2 to improve highway suspension and improved the power output of the V8 to compete with the Mercedes and the BMW SUVs. They had no choice but to go with a visc fluid CD to spread the max torque that can be sent to an individual axle. So the D1 has the beefy floating axles and associated running gear used on the Defender... I'm thinking the D1 would be the choice. It's like having the reliability of the Defender with some more room, and frankly a better value than the Defender given their inflated price. As for the D2? It has it's place among the BWM, Mercedes, and Landcruiser. Humming down the highway most of the time. Eric |

Visc fluid diff on a D2? Huh? More power? The only power gain from the D1 to D2 was due to mostly ECU changes. And 188hp on the D2 is nothing compared to the 290hp and 310 lb/ft on the V8 BMW. I really don't think they wanted both to play on the same field. |

"As for the D2? It has it's place among the BWM, Mercedes, and Landcruiser. Humming down the highway most of the time." Hell no....That Bimmer wagon is more of a sports car and will blow the doors off a D2 on the street. As for Humming down the hwy, there are quite a few folks out there that would disagree. |

We've actually been leaning more towards the D1 now. We've driven a few of them and are now looking for the right one. I can't wait to get it all dirty!!! |

Eric, the Di and DII have the same x-fer box, the LT230. Only difference is the DII doesn't come with the ability to lock the CDL from inside (unless you add one of the many kits). I think you're confusing the Rangie x-fer box with the Disco's. And yes, the DII will hum down the highway, but comparing them to the BMW's, Merc's, etc. is like comparing apples to oranges, or DSI's to Four Runners. |
