Well, it's time to change the child seat around to face forward.

There is no point to attach the seat tether in the rear of th DI as far as I can tell.

The dealer sold me a little tether clip for $12 and told me there is a point in the back of the seat to bolt it to. After pulling the seat back apart, I can't find any such point.

Any suggestions on where to bolt on the tether clip.

I don't know if the Disco 1 has it but my 1999 Disco II has an anchor point in the cargo area. This is not made for teathering a child seat but it's the best thing to no anchor. The D-Rings seem pretty strong and are made to hold down cargo (note: these are not the little cheap plastic anchor points on the side). It wasn't until 2000-2001 that the rear teather started showing up.

I attached a teather loop to the bolt that anchors the rear seat belts. All you need is a torx bit and some locktite.

Jeff, I had the dealer install two anchor points in my '98 D1. The points are located at the rear, just above the door.

the tether clips I got don't seem like much, but they appear to be plenty strong.

I'll go measure were they are installed if you like, lemme know

I tether the seats to the seatbelt stays just behind the rear 60/40 seats. To get it tight enough, you have to lift the child seat up about two inches, and clip in. Once you've done this, the seat will be floating a good inch or so over the seat itself. The seatbelt (and the weight of your child) will do the rest.

This works well, and you'll really have to put your knee into it to get that seat to contact the seat bottom.

This is my opinion only, I don't know if LRNA and DOT would agree!

Good luck,

e

There is a factory mounting point on DII seats, in the outboard positions. I'm not sure about the DI. With the DII, you
1. Carefully remove the seat back trim pannel of the requested side (60% or 40%).
2. Locate anchor point for tether bracket.
NOTE: The anchor mounting hole must be large enought to allow the spacer to pass through and sit flush on the seat frame. Cut the hole from the trimmed side and insure that the hole has a clean edge to it.
3. Refer to dimensional locations upplied in Figures 3 and 4 and drill a 15mm (5/8 inch) hole.
4. Align the trim panel fir-tree studs with the seat back cupsacks prior to trim panel installation.
5. Carefully install the trim panel.
6. When the trim panel is installed, assemble the bracket and hardeare in the same order as illustrated for the header position (Refer to Figure 1).
7. Apply Loctite 242 to threads of bolt threads and install.
8. Torque bolt to 35Nm (25lb.ft).
Factory pay time is .20 hours.

If you give me a fax number, I will fax you the technical information, with diagrams. [email protected]

Thanks Alyssa. I told the guy I had a DI, but it sounds like he sold me a kit and gave me information for a DII installation.

Sounds like the easiest thing to do will be to add another tie down behind the middle seat in the cargo area and attach the tether there.

Right now, I am using the seat belt bracket, but that is off to one side and not directly behind the seat.

There is a factory welded in nut for a teather bolt and eye to go on the DI. It's in the roof under the liner right above the rear door.

Jeff;

why not use the factory hard point for the child seat tether? It was put there for a reason, works fine and presumable the factory and relevant authorities deemed it sufficient to restrain a child in the event of a crash. why second guess?

According to my tapemeasure, the pointing points are about 400 mm either side of the centre line of the Disco, in the trim, just above the rear door. Other benefit is that with the tether attached to the roof, there is still space to load the obligatory 'gear' such as stroller, high chair, diaper bag and beer cooler.
