Went off-road last night with my 97 disco and after extraction from a nasty mud-hole, by brother noticed oil in the water. Not drops my any means, but a nice puddle. Yikes. Well damn, its my front crank seal. So I have a few questions: 1. If your have replaced this before, scale of 1-5, 5= hardest, rank please 2. Would Nathan sell kit for all seals/gaskets or do you need to order each seal/gasket separately 3. If separate, list of parts? 4. Where can I turn for a step-by-step Thanks Bruce |

Bruce, My front crankshaft seal is also leaking. If I were going to rate it as a DIY job I would say a 4. It takes a pretty good selection of tools. On mind after taking off the serpentine belt, fan shroud, and getting to the 24mm crankshaft bolt you need an air wrench to break it loose. All a breaker bar will do is turn over the motor. In order to reach it with an impact wrench you will most likely have to take the fan off. Once you get the bolt out you will need a harmonic balencer puller to extract the pulley. If you made it this far you can get the seal from Rover's North for six dollars. When applying the new seal be sure to grease the inside so it won't burn up. If you have the time and tools mentioned above go for it. If not I suggest taking it to a shop. GOOD LUCK, John w/ 98 disco |
