That's it; what is the best type oil filter I can buy for my Disco ('94) without having to go to the dealer, or send away for an original LR filter??

Damn people the LR filter is the most common filter in the world. Dont believe the dealership, that the LR factory filter is a one of a kind...and The NAPA gold is what I use it works fine and is a few dollars cheaper.

Thanks. That's what I'm thinking about the LR filter, it's probably just a NAPA, or GM but without any markings.

...so, that's 2 for NAPA

I have the K&N filter on it right now, I spent $9.00.

The reason I ask is I have heard some talk about the "overflow" capacity or something-or-other of certain filters being better for the Disco??

Ive used the K&N and the Fram X2. Both do fine, and have had no problems.

Use the Crosland "long" filter. It'll give you more filtering area than the short LR filter. I think Atlantic British sells them in groups of 6 or 7 or something.

I have some info regarding the Mobil 1 vs K&N filter. They both use a very high quality filter media, but for what its worth the K&N's seem to use higher quality anti-drainback valves on them. Not sure specifically with the rover filters but on Audi/VW and a couple others I spend more time at startup with no oil pressure with the the Mobil 1 filter. With the K&N I get 5bar immediately instead of 1 second after startup.
And I like the bolt on the bottom for unscrewing it if the filter is on there hard.
I'm using K&N. Cheaper than Factory and probably much better. Maybe not as cheap as a Fram but I HAVE had nasty experiece with Frams and other cheap filters. namely filter media blowing out.
Just flushed my engine last oil change so as of next oil change my Disco 1 (Only had it a couple months) will be running
Mobil 1 oil and K&N filter.

-> There are part# for other makes for tdi's on Otto's pages, button "Disco Specs".

-> For V8s etc. go to Fleetguard:
http://www.fleetguard.com/en/catalog/index.jhtml
On that page, you will be able to search for their equivalent part# on the basis of OEM part#. They do oil, fuel and airfilters.

Todd,

How much are you paying for K&N oil filters? Every time I've checked, they're more than I was paying for genuine ones.

FWIW...

I'm paying $9 for the K&N. I guess thats about what OEM ones are from aftermarket sources. Dealer wanted like $14 when I asked and I said hell no. Like the .75cent dash light bulb they wanted $14 for. Give me a break. The AUDI dealer had that same Bulb (EXACT SAME PN from OSRAM) for $1.50. Something is serieously wrong with having LR charge 9x more than the AUDI dealer for the same part.
Anyhow, I know I can get cheaper filters after cutting apart a few filters I'm not impressed with most of them. THe K&n is well made. So is the Mobil 1 but I like the K&N better. WIX makes nice filters as well.

I have to admit to having used the "POS" Fram filter before, but I primarily use Purolator. I have them on my (racing) SPEC Miata and my LR and my Triumphs. However, they are changed every 4 - 5k miles. I can't believe the rubbish expounded by some to keep buying the LR-supplied filters. It's not as if they actually make the filters! It's subcontracted out to some other company who make them at the lowest bid!

Certainly, there are some items which I would only purchase from LR. But, filters, plugs and bulbs are not among them.

Cheers,

Castrol Max or whatever top of the line Castrol has. Went to a K-Mart going out of business and filled up my shopping cart (literally) with every last one for $.50. I also got a bunch of Penske ones, haven't tried them yet...

SO what type of oil should one use? I see that many are using Mobil1, which I use in all my other cars.

I did some Oil Research a few years ago. Mobil1 / Redline / Amsoil all were definately better than the Castrol and Valvoline brands in both flow at cold temps and resistance to vaporization. I run Mobil 1 because its easy to find but I'll likely run Redline 30weight racing oil in the Audi Rally car.
I will be switching the Rover To Mobile 1 and the larger K&N filter next Oil Change and upping my oil Change Interval from 3k to 4k miles.
