hi i own a 94es 3.9 disco.my exhaust pipe has become very sooty and fuel economy seems to have dropped off at similar time.suspect that car is running to rich.does the adjustment on the air flow meter affect this and how do i adjust w/out a sniffer?.are there other components that effect fuel to air mixture.(o2 sensors, ecu)?thanks |

My '98 disco had a problem with too much lean-to-rich ratio. I fixed it with new sparks and wires. |

Pretty much everything affects the mixture, o2 sensors, maf sensor, ects sensor, air temp sensor, and most of all the ecm(computer) All these sensors send signals to the ecm which dictates the mixture so unfortunately there is no 'single' thing that could be the problem. The best thing to do is try to diagnose which components are bad(if any) and repair/replace. Thats why they call it 'diagnostics' Although I could be wrong, I don't think the MAF can be adjusted to lean out the mixture. As far as I understand it is a self contained system relying on proper readings from all the sensors in order to make the right mixture. There aren't many parts that are cheap enough to just replace and hope it works. The ects is about $25 bucks, it could be that. The 02 sensors are anywhere from $80ish to $150ish each so those should be tested first. Hope this helps. Good Luck. JMcD |
