As the speed increases, the steering wheel shaking became more noticeable. My damper is pretty new. Is the low powering steering fluid or something else? Please help.

when was the last time you balanced your tires? that's the most common cause of wobble.
absent that, did you go off road and plaster your wheels with mud? if so, clean them off.
probably not a power steering problem. but have you checked your fluid? you should just as a matter of course, especially since these beasts tend to leak it so badly.

Could also be warped rotors. Do you notice it more when braking?

Its unbalanced tires, or mud on your wheels.

Unbalanced tires. But don't spend money getting them balanced, just go off-roading!! You'll throw a few weights in a mud hole, test it on the road, then try again till you get it right!

(At least, that's my excuse to my wife for the little "short-cuts" we always seem to find.)

"Wait, I just gotta test something."

Hey Ed

does the vibration come at a particular speed then go away after you pass a certian band... i.e. fine 0-50mph shakes from 51-65mph then smooths out past 65mph??? if you've had your tires balanced reciently and it still happens have your alignment checked...

well have your "toe in" checked (thats the only alignement adjustment on Disco's) i had the same problem, then had my alignemnt checked. turns out my toe settings were way off. after it was adjusted... Bam no more shaking.

Craig had the same problem, even after taking his D2 in a few times for a wheel balance... i told him to have his alignemnt checked and he to was a happy camper again.

Hi Guys,

Thanks for the info. I did washed off lots mud off the tires and rims. I will have the "toe in" checked. Can any shop do it or I have to go to a dealer?

Any shop should be able to do it. Pretty basic

Any alignment shop. Actually, you can do it yourself with a tape measure. Wheels should be toed out 0 to 2 mm, i.e., 0 to 2 mm greater width between the rims in front of the axle compared to behind the axle.

If it happens when you hit a road irregularity, it would be the steering damper.

Same thing was happening to me in my '97. Took it in for an oil change and the dealer did a quick check, turned out to be a loose connection on the pan hard rod (?). Tightened it up and was good as new.

Ed-

I'm sure it's related to your knee, so get that knee fixed! :)

Ken was absolutely right about my alignment. I had vibration at highway speeds, and it felt like a balancing issue, but it never completely went away after re-balancing, so I took it in to have it aligned and it's as smooth as silk now.

Oh, I just thought of something. I had a vibration just like that (I guess) 50mph and above, a vibration in the steering wheel. I thought I had thrown a weight on a wheel when off-roading at the Pac-NW British Field Meet (on the Motocross track at PDX Int. Raceway - come if you can this year, it's fun.) Anyway, a while later I noticed that one of the nuts on my prop shaft was loose, I tightened it. And if that was it or not I do not know, but I am pretty sure the vibration went away right after that.

Dr. Koby,

The crutches will be off this week and I just got a new leg brace. I will try it out to see if it helps with the wobbling. :).

Thanks again guys.

Be sure your lug nuts are tight.

Ed, The first simple thing usually done when balancing of a tire is suspected is to simply rotate front to rear on one side. Test drive it and if it dissapates, unbalanced wheel is the culprit now on the back. If problem is still there, rotate the right side front to back to see if the problem was with the right front tire. Of course you could try the spare in place of the suspected tire, IF you have a known, good spare.

Hate to tell it but don't discount a worn out steering box. Mine leaked and when replacing it I found the loewr output bearings chewed to s***.

Guess what hasn't occured in the 3 months since I put a used steering box in?

Mine would hit a bump on one side at 25 to 50 and set up a huge wobble that was best stopped by backing off the throttle and light braking.

Last week I had my steering box replaced under warranty and this took out the most dramatic vibes and slopiness in the front end. Then I had it aligned today and now I am 95% better than a couple of weeks ago.

Always chasing down the vibes :)

My 55-65mph wobbles were cured by one of the following items. I had them replaced at the same time, which is why I say it may have been any of the three.

. New sterring dampner (have it replaced again)
. rear left trailing arm was bent
. new shocks and springs, OME MD front and HD rear

Good luck,

Javier
