Of course - nothing in the Haynes. Jeeze that thing sucks. Anyway - before I start crawling under and poking around - does anyone know the most efficient (least swear-inducing) procedure for this?

By the way - these servers are FLYING now - Good work Discoweb!!! You guys are all AWESOME!

I think you may have to take out the radio with a Special tool - Ugh... Don't know - just cautioning.

What year truck are you working on? I have replaced the antennae on a 94 Disco, without removing the front quarter panel. I recommend removing the front quarter panel, unless you like to complicate your life.

'96 was the last year for the antenna in the fender, so the '94 procedure will work the same.
if you have a stock head unit you will have to take it to a stereo shop or dealer and have them just pull it. or you can buy the tool.......they are pretty cheap.
i would recommend not putting a power antenna back in. just get a standard $15 whip style. nothing to break ever again.

I would have to agree with Garrett, just replace it with a whip or collapsible one.

just to let you guys know, i found a patch in the antenna cable

i had removed all the interior in my 95 to do the rust treatment and bedliner thing. putting everything back in i have relocated the ECU and cd changer. well, i was sorting through wires and found that you can disconnect the antenna under the dash in the passenger side. just to the right of middle of the dash, below ash tray. you may have to fish around for it but there was a "splice" to disconnect the antenna. this will prevent you from having to remove the radio. and, at one time i thought i heard someone say that the antenna plug on the back of the stock head unit is not the standard type. well, this splice was just like the plugins i have always seen for aftermarket stereos.

i agree with john, put a lightweight whip antenna on there.

Jude,

i have a 95 disco... and the antenna removal (title of your post) was easy for me. i cant say for complete radio head removal... but to make a long story short...

(a car wash "ate my" original collapsable one, i replaced it with a power model which stopped working after a yr "POS Pep Boy's Harrada (sp) $49 thing, now i have a generic whip style one)

1. turn your wheel to the left (more room) now remove all the the little plastic "riv nut" thingies that hold the plastic wheel well (they line the edge of the wheel well. be careful because these things break pretty easy.

2. you should be able to see the underside of your antenna, the wire and where it goes through the firewall, unbolt it

3. remove the passenger "kick panel" inside the kick panel area there is a "spaghetti" wires. have someone jiggle the old antenna wire from inside the fenderwell and you should be able to find it. the wire has a standard antenna plug so replacing the antenna should be easy.

good luck

KEN

BTW. if your buying an aftermarket "generic" antenna.. make sure it has a "wide mount" the hole in the fender is larger then most so if you get one that has a skinny base it will fall through

I did this job on my 96 SD. The only advice I would add to the above is to make sure you re-secure the black plastic cover for the ECU to the PS fender wall with RTV. I failed to do this and ended up getting water in there which caused me starting difficulties.
