Just bent my track rod into an unrecognizable shape, so I'll need smth new. There's some strengthened to be bought - but these are expensive. It seems to be piece of cake to manufacture smth in the garage - basically it's a tube/rod that's threaded in both ends. Only problem is tracing links-thread tool for one end of the rod/tube... Anyone done this and can advice on choice of material and gauge? Frode |

Yes. I am of the opinion that 4130 Cr-Mo tubing is the best material of construction from a strength/weight/flexibility standpoint. I have a set I made up using 1" OD, .125 wall thickness and solid inserts at each end. The most difficult and expensive part is purchasing the taps to cut the threads as they are a bastard size and to make matters worse, one is left-hand thread! The stock tubes have an OD of 0.875 inches, and an ID of 0.6875. Front tube, OAL ~33". Let me know how yours turn out. I know that mine are something of a departure from present art, but I am suspicious that the tubing might have some advantages over the solid ones offered by some of the vendors. |

Thanx! A tubing should be stronger, but then also more difficult to find smth of an appropriate size/material etc. Solid ones are more easily obtainable, and gauge isn't that much of a matter. Any idea as to diameter if I have to resort to a solid bar? You used solid inserts - 'cause you didn't find tubing of an appropriate size for the threading? How did you secure it - welding? Do you remember what kind of threading for the tie-rod ends? Couldn't find any nut of a known threading to check, but it looked like a standard M17 to me... I thought I'd go to the workshop of a local nuclear reactor (sic!) to do the threading, and I know they got fine stuff for metric sizes, but probably very few imperial sized taps. Frode |

From memory here (could be wrong) - the stock TRE threading is 11/16 x 16 tpi - both LH and RH threads Bill |

DAP has a decent set it includes both the Track and Tie rods also new greaseable ends, You will need to paint the rods, look nice and shiney for about ten seconds. There made by Bearmach and have a 1.125 od soild bar stock I doubt even under the most extreme situations will you bend these. something else will break first. I paid 169 for the set to include shipping. You will need a kit to mount the stablizer |

Well , it seems like more and more complanies are coming out with these. I still think the Rovertym links are the best that can be had. No worries of them looking like shit and even if they get a bow in them they are still good to go.. By the time you spend the money dicking around trying to make a set you could have just dropped some cash with John and got a better set.. Kyle |

Ahhh, Bill, I just hate those imperial threadings...will probably leave my project stranded - purchasing links and standard taps for that size will make it not sensible anymore. I'd have to pull one of the tie-rods to check for sure. And, Yeah, Axel, the Halden Reactor is still boiling - some 400 meters from my office. It has been making steam now for 44 years, and are supposed to keep running for another 5 or 10 years. Not too happy prospects... But their workshops are fine, having the latest equipment of whatever you need, and a friend of mine (Series III/Stage One hybrid) is responsible for some of the engineering... Roverly Yours, Frode |

Frode: Having worked in corporate management for the company that ran D. C. Cook, I was quite surprised at your statement that you had access to the shops at a nuke plant. In the US, you could probably not get the materials into the plant, much less out of the plant. Even though I was a corporate employee with great responsibility for emergency response at the plant, I would not have been allowed access to the shop, much less to do work for myself. While it was a great job there are times I'm pleased I'm no longer there. Peace, Paul Since September 11, this has only gotten worse. |

Tom, I don't have any vendor specific opinions but all the kits seem to follow the same design and place the stabilizer at somewhat of an extreme angle. All I have seen and read leads me to believe the stabilizer work's best if kept as close too parallel with the track or tie rods and remain parallel durring any amount of suspension travel, such as it is in its stock location I believe the relocation kits that are currently available place too much additional stress on the steering box and could possibly contribute to premature box failures, not that the POS boxes need and additional help in failing. I do 100% agree in its stock location the SS hangs very low, I am kicking around some design ideas nothing solid yet. IMO I don't think its wise to save a $45.00 stabilizer and ruin a $500.00 box not wise choice Also, i am not 100% sure but most of the kits were designed for the D90 and require you to use a D90 eyed stabilizer, not a problem if you need to replace the old stabilizer. With all this in mind I am not sold on any of the ones I have seen thus far... As far as The Bearmach rods I believe are still the best value out there. 1.125 OD, The price also included new greaseable ends, so for the money you get all 4 ends both rods for 139 and it was around 30 to ship. My only complaints about them, It does need to be painted or powder coated how ever you like, I also had to mill a flat on one end to make it easier to aligin. I don't like the pipe wrench teeth mark look I am not selling them nor do I get a kick back from DAP. I even paid retail so don't go there with the parts whore thing |

Paul! The workshops are not within the reactor area, but I guess "smth" could be made up in the shops anyway - what they mostly do, is make rigs for testing of fuelrods, which is the business of the workshop. It's the OECD Halden Reactor Project. You won't get into the shop without joining one of the employees. BTW, I were on the Obninsk Reactor south of Moscow (the oldest electricity producing reactor in the world) some 10-11 yrs ago. You could have walked in! We didn't get any "test-strips" either(whatever the english term is) for testing how much radiation we received: "Because management guaranteed there were no radiation in the area". Passing part of the reactor I felt kinda dizzy, but guess/hope that must have been smth else... Frode |

WOW! In the US, you couldn't get into the parking lot without being vetted now. Then, one must prove citizenship, employment status and reason for entry. Then you are passed through Drug, Bomb, and Metal Detectors, before being given a dosimeter (test strip). Then, you get an escort who must maintain visual contact with you the entire time you're there, even in the bathrooms! Of course, D. C. Cook went from being the longest running reactor in the world to being one of the longest shutdowns by the NRC! I don't know if they are up and running yet. Even with all of the security and employee screening, they couldn't keep folks from throwing empty coffee cups in the ice baskets that are there to cool the reactor in event of a core problem. I don't miss it one bit. Paul |

Ill sleep better tonight knowing that security of our reactors is no longer equal to that of retail outlets like WalMart. Frode, The term i belive is Maximum Permissible Exposure in case your concerned how you were used as a sponge check this link http://www.orcbs.msu.edu/radiation/radmanual(html)/radmanmaxexposure.html The devices I used were A direct reading and Film http://www.orau.com/ptp/collection/dosimeters/dosimeters.htm |

We were held to ALARA standards, rather than MPE. Alara is (from memory)As Low As Reasonably Achievable, or some such. As I was in corporate management, I was usually flown in for a few hours and then right back out. Did have a few scary situations though. I was present once during a reactor trip that had even the seasoned sub jocks fouling their undershorts. No one can adequately prepare for a huge BOOM, a shuddering vibration and the sound of millions of gallons of water cooling things instantaneously. Turned out that one of the divers working on an intake structure had gotten sucked into a feedwater pump and they shut it down to find the pieces to send to his family. At a million gallons a minute, there wasn't much left to send home. The second time, I was down in the bowels of the plant dressed in my banker's uniform (grey pinstripe suit), complete with all of my ID badges (Three while at the nuke plants), and my company hard hat with name and company name on it. I heard this clanking noise behind me and turned to find two secuirty nazis standing there. Both were heavily armed with sidearms, one had a SPAS shotgun and the other had the shortest M-16 I have ever seen. They very rudely demanded that I identify myself and why I was where I was. Of course, being the person I am I had to inquire if they were blind as I had all of the ID in the world proudly displayed on my outermost garment above belt line, and was escorted... It ended with all three of us getting chewed out by the plant manager and my being chewed out by the president of the company once I got home. I am so glad I work in automotive now! Paul |

Dee, Your wounds heal slow! I am a support of you and Nathan, I popped my messages up in support in the past when all that bullcrap came up. I was just curious if you sold Bearmach parts, that's all! I already have the Rockware Kit. Never thought about the steering box issue, though. Interesting food for thought. Tom |

Tom, The Parts-whore comment was not directed towards you it was an overhead comment too keep this string under 200 lines.. I was thinkg of getting custom plates PTSWHOR Funny I am helping a friend with a steering box, His Disco has never been on the dirt 80K miles 2nd owner an old lady owned it first you know the type pristine condition. The steering box leaks bad 1 qt a day leak. Lots of play in the shaft and corrosion. My Point is it really does not make much sense with Rovers you can beat the shit out of them or baby them to death and this shit just breaks. Cheers Dee |
