I've heard a bunch of different opinions on this issue. The dealers (most of them, not you Alyssa) tell my to only use dino based oil, and not to touch syn. I've been using syn. oil in my other cars for years. I my current car (soon to be a 99 Disco) after upgrading to syn. I started to get about a 5-10% increase in mpg. My 93 BMW 525 came from the factory with syn.

So, what's the general consensous?

THnaks,

Zak

This subject has been beat LITERALLY to death in here. Do a search on the archives and you will find HUNDREDS of threads beating this around senseless!!

as USUAL, it sincerely comes down to personal preference!! One oil is not better or worse....you OBVIOUSLY know synthetic has advantages, but if you're changing your oil every 3000 miles or so, synthetic is really an over priced overkill!!

I have used both, in all kinds of conditions....cold, desert heat, offroading, freeway driving..........and all I Can say is I had a peace of mind knowing I had synthetic, probably a false sense of security becuase it probably makes NO difference!! Especially since I am anal about changing my oil every 3000 miles. Add up the cost of putting in synthetic over the course of a year as opposed to using dino at every 3000 mile oil change.....see what is cheaper....go with that......you can NOT beat regularly scheduled changes.

Just drain it and forget it. Oil is overrated. I've been running my Disco dry, with the exception of my Slick 50 pretreatment, for the last 3 years. No abnormal wear, weird noises, vibrations, or decrease in performance. It also makes the Disco lighter so you can go more places and haul more things (you'd be amazed at what the feds CAN'T find in the oil sump). Try it! If the engine wasn't supposed to be run this way, they wouldn't have made it out of metal.

Zak, I'm going to chime in and agree with my fellow dealers. You have a better shot at having fewer leaks if you use regular oil. Synthetic increases the chances your rover will leak. Therefore, it's generally better to leave things alone and use the good 'ole thick goopy regular oil with all of its imperfections. We're not talking about a high performance engine in a Rover, we're talking about a workhorse. Rover + pampering = unhappy rover. Rover + abuse = happy rover.

I've always used synt in my cars, I personally think it is far superior to dyno oil in every way. My last 735 had 240000 miles on it and no oil consumption and great compression. I love synt and the extended mileage between oil changes.

BUT if you offroad, don't bother with synt as you should change your oil more frequent due to the extra particals that will contaminate the oil.

Good point, I didn't think about the extra changes i should do after off roading more. It's just that I've been using Mobil 1 for so long now, I don't even know what are decent brands of regular oil.

Alyssa, get in any more 99's yet?

How about synthetic fluids elsewhere?

Diffs, ••••••, transfer case?

You guys are swaying me back to dino for the oil in the Rover, but how about for the others?

Oh, and Jason, WTF? No oil? You surely jest.

Hate to say that I like throwing money away, but I buy Mobil, Agip, Castrol synt in bulk when ever I see a sale at target/Pep boys or where ever and tread it like regular oil after offroading... For the 30-40% extra I pay I still think it is worth it.

Did I ever mention my dads Mercedes that used synt since new? When he sold it to a Taxi company it had 800000 miles on it.:) Synt works

Tom,

I kid you not! I also removed the tires from my wheels to reduce rolling resistance. After adjusting for the change in diameter, I was immediately getting better mileage.
You know, with that rover v8, if you swap the pistons, deck the block, and up the CR to 13:1, you can run a 150-shot of NOS (say "Nawsss") with 87 octane pump gas without a hint of detonation. You should see all the sparks from my 4-wheel burnout!
I've got too much time on my hands...

Wow. The best thing is that you can ride on train tracks w/out the tires.

But I can't get off the tracks when the train is coming...

Anybody heard of AMSOIL? I've heard some good things about it.

My bro-in-law runs AMsoil in all of his equip, mostly industrial grade excavation gear and dump trucks. He's a "dealer" and they have this testing procedure that he uses to determine when to change it. He swears by it. Sounds like overkill to me for personal vehicles.
