I've noticed a rather impressive amount of decrese in my engine power when I'm using the Air Conditioning. It's mostly noticeable when pulling hills but even around town it's a big change when engaging/disengaging the compressor. Everything works fine, but I'm jut wondering if this is indicative of another problem. The vehicle has just hit 60,000 miles and I have not had that service done, but everything was checked out when I bought it (though not by a dealer). Does it just need a tune up or is this normal?!

Hello there, in my case it is the same as yours. There is one hill in particular right by my house that if I don't get a running start up it I creep along like a school bus unless I disengage the A/C. With the A/C off it can get to speed quicker it seems. Anyhow, at least now you know your situation is shared with another, and I'm sure many others would agree. Later.. RS

Mine's identical too - even more so if the AC is set to recirculate. I have a 98 LSE which has just passed the 60k mark, so it seems like it could be normal behaviour

Well, atleast I'm not alone. But I just wish there was some way to remedy the situation!!
Thanks for your input!

well especially in hot weather (of course when you have the AC on....haha) the vicous fan will kick in pretty good. your truck will sound like an older Blazer or S-10. it robs your truck of some decent power for sure. even at slow speeds you will hear it come on pretty good.

Suzannah et al

Due to the overall configuration of your trucks, they are slow compared to most other vehicles.

My sugestions:

Drive in 3rd gear and you will have better throttle response. The engine will be turning 30% faster so it will accellerate faster when you open the throttle. I can assure you that everyone elses engine is spinning faster too. My shifter moves freely between 3rd and D, without having to touch the gearshift button. That is so that you can shift at will without worry of shifting into the wrong position.

Secondly on my truck the ECU cuts off the AC compressor when you open the throttle, conserving power for driving, but reducing the AC output.

So try 3rd gear and some throttle and it wouldn't hurt to say "I THINK I CAN, I THINK I CAN"

Good point Randall...and I know the "I think I cans" help. Having driven a few old diesels in my day I must just remember that it could be worse. My last car was a Ford Explorer 2wd and I never noticed this problem though, so I was surprised by it. However, I know the 2wd vehicle was geared much higher and was equipped with probably half the torque of my Disco. I will just try to live without AC when really pulling some hills!

I'm considering removing my belt-driven pump and replacing it with electricals - has anyone else done this.

The ECU cuts of the A/C under throttle? My A/C kicks off when any rattle disturbs the electrical connection...unless there is a method to that madness!?
I just consider the A/C toggle switch as a "power adder!"

don i think that topic was discussed some time ago and there were a few people that did make that leap. i don't really remember much about it except that a few have done it. then again i am a little hung over this morning.
shit i a mean i was having a hard time keeping my truck at 65 mph yesterday in the heat with the AC full tilt. then again those damn 32" tires and NATO's act like like i have an X Cargo rack on top in the open position.
