I'm getting cofused here:
The round cylinder looking piece right behind the exhaust tip - is this the muffler or resonator??

The large piece in the middle part of the underbody - is this the muffler or resonator??

I thought it is the muffler and the resonator, respectively. Someone told me otherwise. please clarify..thanks

resonator is in the rear and muffler in the middle.

The rear most one is definitely the resonator. The large oval unit under your passenger compartment is the muffler.

Greg D.

So what does the resonator do? And what difference does it make when you remove it?

It basically is there to remove some frequency of noise that could effect the cabin. I did notice a minor difference with it off. You may not.

Yeah, adding on to Tom's comment, through wave dynamics, the resonator attempts to bounce sound waves around the inside of the chamber to put some reflected frequencies at 180 degrees out of phase with the source frequency, cancelling it out. To some extant, that may happen, but often it changes the tone of the exhaust note. Sometimes the change is for the better, but obviously you are also aware of the gross abuse of resonator design in the aftermarket application on imported compact family cars (yes, even with the coffee can exhaust, they still aren't a race car).

I removed my resonator when I installed my rear bumper. At first, I had a bad resonance between 1750-2000 RPM. It was very annoying, but it eventually went away (?). It does have a throatier sound to it now, and you do get a little more noise in the interior, but not really noticeable to anyone other than myself.

Anon, the muffler is in the center of the vehicle and the resonator is at the rear. The muffler is larger than the resonator.

The resonator is what is missing in the pic below. I just had a local shop cut the resonator off and bend a pipe so it could be tucked up close to the bumper. I also made sure the final cut was angled to help prevent the tailpipe catching on objects while reversing.

Thanks, that overweight bitch with dodgy welds is still holding up and protecting the rear end.
