I have a 98 D1 with 47000, about a month ago the tachometer started bouncing. It quit for 3 weeks and just started doing it again. Also my lights started pulsing when the tach started bouncing and my check engine light comes on sometimes now too. I don't see any difference in performance. Any advise? Thanks in advance.

ALTENATOR, start looking for one you will be needing it soon! really, the tach is fed off the altenator and the pulsing lights is a good indicator that the regulator is going south on you. you can check with the dealer but that is alot of $$$$$$$ if you have an advance auto nearby they do sell remanft. ones with a lifetime warranty, that is the best deal i found, as i recalled it was $250 or so. or you can call nathan or dee at discountrovers.com. good luck.

Yep, the alternator or your serpentine belt may be routed wrong. I had a 1997 where the last tech placed the belt on incorrect...

take this along with you to make sure the belt goes on right. it can fit on improperly as stated above.

Look in the phone book for a place that rebuilds electric motors, alternators and starters, they should be able to replace the regulator for you (pretty sure the parts are Bosch). Most likely a bad diode. I've been through this twice, the first regulator repalcement went T.U. after a couple of months. My repair guy replaced it FOC. Haven't had any problems since.

Replace it now before the low voltage while cranking sets the lights on your dash and you have to go to the stealer to have the lights extinguished.

If battery voltage falls during cranking, it sets a non-volatile code for both ABS and your air bags. The only way to extinguish them is using testbook, auologic or Rovacom.

Thanks for the help. I had the alternator rebuilt in January so I am going to put on a voltage regulator. Is it located between the vacuum box and the washer fluid tank? Also what is the best manual to buy for the discovery?

The regulator is part of the alternator. I have a Haynes manual, which doesn't provide a ton of detail for repairs but it works for me and was much cheaper than a genuine shop manual. I'll take a closer look at mine this evening and see if it says anything about the regulator. As far as your alternator, Rover will tell you that there are no internal serviceable parts, don't know if they include the regulator in that statement or not.

If you can't find the parts locally, try RAM Electric.
