TONIGHT I WENT PLAYING IN MY 97 DISCO AND WENT IN A WATER WHOLE AND GOT STUCK WATER WAS COMMING IN RIGHT SIDE DOORS I WAS ON A HILL SLANT. THE COMPUTER IS DRY AND SO IS MOST OF THE ELEC. IT TURNS OVER FINE JUST WILL NOT START. PLEASE HELP ITS SITTING IN THE WOODS OUT OF THE MUD BUT I DONT WANT TO LEAVE IT THERE ANYLONGER.

Travis, how long did you let it sit to dry out before you gave up and went home? My 97 often quits running after a deep water hole, however if I let it sit for 10 or 15 minutes it dries out and runs perfect. Maybe someone here can shed some light on why these trucks behave like this, and if there are any common trouble spots in the engine compartment to cover with dielectric grease or another fix? |

I GOT IT BACK TO THE HOUSE TODAY AND THE BAT. IS DEAD SO IAM PUTTING IT ON CHARGE AND HOPPING IT WILL CRANK.

Agreed. Chances are it will start after drying out a bit.
But first, remove the air cleaner to make sure it is clean and dry. Take along an extra one just to be safe. Crank it for 10 seconds. If it dies not start, pull the spark plug to see which is lacking; spark or fuel. Take a can of wire dryer along and spray all of the wires and connections under the hood.
If the engine is totally covered in mud, then also think about taking along a small pressure sprayer (1-2 gallon used for killing weeds, etc. in your lawn) filled with water. Use it to remove the worst of the mud from around the electrical components. Then use the wire dryer to dry out the wires.
Also check the oil in your engine to make sure you did not get water in there. If its milky, then change it right away. Take along something to drain the old oil into.
There is a fuse box in the engine compartment that can short out. Pull off the top and check inside. Also check the connections to your starter. The coil packs are on the back of your engine. Be sure to spray them with wire dryer too.

Myself and 2 other discos went on a night run on Sunday night and the lead disco went through a fairly deep puddle going a bit too fast. It took almost 14 hours for his truck to dry out enough to start, so don't despair when it seems to be taking forever. |
