Something very strange was happening when i was driving to work this morning in my 97 disco. At highway speed (65-80 mph) the truck would stall for 1-2 seconds and then be fine for 1-2 seconds, stal for 1-2 seconds ,fine 1-2 seconds.....this happened in perfectly timed intervals and only at speeds greater than 65 mph. It almost felt like the truck was running out of gas. No check engine light on, had a valve job 6000 miles ago. Could this be a bad VSS? Any comments are greatly appreciated.

Mine does that, too.
Bad VSS, I'm told

My '97 did it also. It's the VSS. Drove me crazy.

Vehicle Speed Sensor, located on the T-R-A-N-N-Y.

Leslie, you potty mouth, I can't believe you just spelled that! After all, you're somebody's dad, too, LOL!

So, with all the flying profanity around here, why does the 'bot pick up ••••••, whoops, t-r-a-n-n-y as an offensive word????

Wouldn't a bad vss trip the check engine light though?

Not necessarily. It is intermittant. Chances are, the computer doesn't know it is bad. It probably isn't bad enough to trip it.
Mine has been doing it occasionally for a few years with no light tripped.

The ECU just wants to know if the truck is moving or not (you're idling),or if the truck has exceded the save operating speed (110mph). If it senses that you are above 110, then it cuts back on fuel delivery. Apparently it is not programed to turn the check engine light on.

Leslie-

Isn't the VSS on the rear of the t-case just in between the t-case and the handbrake?

Check the gas tank cap. If it is on loose you loose vaccuum pressure and cause this issue. This happened to me and the dealership said new fuel pump. I tightened the cap and it hasn't happened for 40K miles.

However, this can also be a fuel delivery problem beyond the gas tank, which may or may not trip your check engine light. If you pass the gas cap test, a cheap thing to do is replace the fuel filter and see if that makes things better. The fuel pump could also be at fault.

Why is it that twenty people in a row can respond with the same solution and you always have the one person with the odd diagnosis that NEVER pans out?
