So I've called two tire dealers today, and both will not sell me new tires for my DII!! All I want is a set of BFG 265/75-16 on a stock set of LR wheels. They both give me the reason being some custom SHM lip design on the LR wheel being the reason and it is unsafe to not use the stock size and brands that can take the extra airpressure to set the bead....

Is there any truth to this???

LOL , BS....... It does take some pressure to set the bead but not enough to blow tires apart. Call a competent tire shop and you will get better results..

Hummm

well i can tell you from exprience watching the tire guys put new stock sized michelins on my castor wheels that there is something different about the "castor rim" at least. apearantly the castor rims have some kind of extra "bead retention" bump on the inside of the rim... (so id assume all LR wheels are the same)

when i brought my 95 disco in to have new tires put on all the shop guys were like huddled around the mounting machine...

each time, they seemed to have some kind of problem getting the tire on the rim, once they got it on the rim they started filling up the tire and it looked like the bead was seating about 1 inch in from the side of the rim!!! they would fill up the tire untill it looked full then two of them would start pushing on the tire edges. a few seconds later a BIG POP!!!! would ring out, the guys would jump back and the bead would be seated properly on the edge of the rim... WEIRD! kind of scary cause id imagine if you got your finger in there and the tire popped... id have their finger rolling around inside my wheel...

BUT in any event, unless the stock michelins have an extra heavy duty bead... id imagine any tire would do the same... and my expectation is that any tires bead would be strong enough to handle this.... sounds like your typical dealer "gotta do it our way $,$$$.00 BS

My goodyear mtr's did the same thing. running 235-85-16 on stock 2001 DII rims. Gunshot sounding pop when each one set.

Carl, I have 285's on my stock rims. You'd be better off not buying from the dealer anyway. I can only imagine what they'd charge you for the tires. Go to a local tire shop (Discount Tire, etc.) and get it done there.

besides, the construction on the BFG's should be strong enough to hold the pressure to set the bead just fine. Go look at the rated psi, I'll bet it's higher than your standard stock tires....

Ken & Greg

These are not LR dealers, but tire shops that are saying no...

Do you have the DSII 16x8" rim? I was thinking of using a 245/75 instead, but was told that is was borderline as the rim is a little to wide. I rather have the tire a little skinnier than 265...

According to BFG's website, the following the mud terrain and all terrain tires in 265-75-16 are rated at 3,042 lbs @ 65psi. That's pretty strong and I would think they could handle the pressure.

Carl,

Ask these same tire shop guys if they know who makes your Land Rover. If they say "Toyota" then run far far away.

Carl,

I believe mine are the 16x8 alloys. It is what ever came stock on a 2001 DII SE with 16" rims. They came with 265-55-16 Goodyear HP's I think.

I was told the same thing about my 235-85's, but as far as I can see and tell they fit great. Mine has a little bit of a narrower look than the 265 guys, but I actually preferred the camel trophy look but wanted something taller than the 245's. I'm running mine with 2" of lift on stock rims and they have not given me a problem thus far.

Don't forget to tell them that BFG AT and MT's were stock tires in the 265/75 size for the Land Rover Defender.

What a bunch of BS. Sears gave me no problems. They are right about the lip/bump but there are other companies now including this on their wheels.

I found one place that wasn't greedy at all. $750 for 5 tires mounted and balanced incl tax. BFG AT 265/75-16 :)
