I have only owned my disco for about 1/2 year and while it has been off-road, it has not been that extreme of terrain yet, as I still feel I am getting used to the truck. I can hear all the cries of pain already, and I almost hate to say it............, but my wife's j##p still gets most of the abuse (or love depending on your viewpoint). As I start to push the truck further, my question is "how necessary are spring retainers?" I know I should have them and they are definitely in the MASTER PLAN, but as I see busted retainers and read more, I am almost afraid to take it off road until I get some installed |

Jarrod, retainers are only needed if you have installed shocks that are so long that they allow your springs to unseat. If you do find yourself in need of retainers, I highly reccommend the ones manufactured by Expedition Exchange. |

I know, I know, such newbie questions.........but with the CB lift (OME HDs in the rear) and a set of Bilsteins, am I OK in that respect? And is it ok to have the shocks supporting all that flex without worrying that they will break? In other words, are retainers a good precaution to take even if your shocks do not allow for too much travel? |

Jarrod, If you have OME HD rears with the standard Bilsteins and the swar bar still attached, at full drop the sway bar should be bearing the weight of the axle, not the shock. |

I'm of the opinion that the shocks sould not be used to limit travel. Therefore, if you install longer shocks, use shocks long enough(if you have enough room) that by using retainers, the springs will support the weight of the axle during full droop, not the shock. Problem is, that's not always possible. In those cases, you could always use a limit strap to take the weight off of the shocks. |

Thanks for the input guys! And yes, I do still have the sway bars attached, but I would like to make quick disconnects for them. Maybe the limit strap is the way to go then. |
