Hi I just purchased a 1997 Disco 1, bog standard with 60k and an extended warranty. First off I have spent hours on this site and love tit - its been super helpful. I am new(ish) to off-roading but cannot wait to start. My question is about the transfer case. The person I bought it from never had it off road. I doubt its been in 4WD Low before. I can get it into neutral and also to engage the diff-lock in 4WD High but I am having real trouble getting it into 4WD Low. Its really spungy plus there is a buzzer on the whole time. It seems to engage it though. Also getting it out of diff-lock seems hard also. Any tips would be really appreciated. Thanks and I hope I can contribute in the future, Andy |

The trick to getting it from high to low is to be driving very slow (1-2 mph) and put the transmission in neutral. Then, move the t-case shifter forward into low and then move the transmission back to D. |

Exercise! It's probably just stuck from lack of use. Whenever you have a few moments, practice moving from high to low, and from difflock off to difflock on. It'll probably free up after a little exercise. David |

But the buzzer shouldn't come on when its in low? The buzzer is just when its in neutral is that correct? THanks. |

For once anonymous makes really good sense. I, too, fall in that category! Tom |

The buzzer is a neutral indicator. I just purchased a 98 to replace my flamed 94, and the indicator is a bit unnerving at first. And I fall in the same category with anonymous. |

If your getting the buzz you need to push it a bit further till it locks and the buzz stops. mine was a little stiff, and I changed the Transfer case fluid and that seemed to help it out. It may need it anyway.... |

Mike Rupp has the answer. I bet 30% of my miles are offroad and I use high and low often, however I still have to shift in and out of drive before low locks-in. Just the nature of my beast anyway. |

While test driving a Disco with a manual transmission, my wife and I got stuck 3 miles from the dealer with that buzzing sound going on. The car was in gear, but barely, it was saying that we weren't totally locked in but we could still drive. I couldn't figure it out (those figure "8" hyrogliphic instructions on the transfere case were not clear for someone who really knew nothing about the car at the time.) Anyway, I was stuck in low range with that buzzer on for 3 miles! The transfere case was just not well used. Once I read the instructions in the handbook I tried it again, and it worked. It does help to use the transfere box every two weeks or so. And it does help to be rolling very slowly, or when at a stop to "jiggle" it into gear by shifting into "D" then back to "N" then pushing the lever to where you want it. Don't force it though, when it goes in, it will go without much trouble. http://landrover.mrbaileyshistory.net |
