Anyone have tips or proper steps on how to remove a steering wheel from a Disco 1. I am replacing my turn/wiper switches and I have to remove the steering wheel first. Any tips before I begin?...thanks!! |

glenh why are you removing the steering wheel? just remove the cover behind the steering wheel and you have total access to the switches. its a pretty straight forward fix. mike w |

I did the remove the cover behind the steering wheel, but it seems that I cannot get the switches out. I am afraid of breaking somethin so I was just going to replace that whole assembly. Should the turn signal switch come out that easy, because your way would save me alot of time...thanks |

Mike, Please enlighten - my turn switch doesnt cancel, and I cant get the switch out! with covers off, there are 2 screws I can get out with wheel 1/4 turn from straight ahead, and one at the rear, but switch still wont come out. It feels a bit loose, but I have tugged every way I can to no avail. thanks, |

You only need to remove the 2 screws in the front. I'll tell you what I did jp. I slid a fine flathead screwdriver underneath the top of the switch, I then grabbed the turn signal arm and gave it a quick tug. It slid right out. I had a hell of a time getting mine out untill I gave it a good tug and elevated the plastic casing that holds the switch....try that, Glen |

Glen, So there is a catch of some sort under the 'top' casing around the switch? slide a blade in there parallel to steering wheel plane? In the centre of the switch, or towards top or bottom? Thanks for the tip, the book is useless here, doesnt even show how to get the wheel off anyway. jp |

Glen, Successfully got switch out - thanks for the tip, to find that cancelling failure is due to piece broken off the slip ring plastic mounting on bottom of wheel. Hopefully cheaper than the switch, but the wheel will have to come off to fix it, so... back to square one, how to get the wheel off? Three holes filled with foam high in the centre under the horn push??? jp |

The slip ring..? is that the plastic part that holds both the turn and washer switch..that is wraped around the steering rod behind the wheel? Did you break that part? If you take the whhel off make sure to unplug you negative battery terminal as well. |

Glen, No, this part attaches to the bottom of the wheel itself. This has 'ears' that pick up on a piece in the switch housing that does the cancelling of the turn switch. It looks like it has a brass ring on its underside that picks up +12V from a brass wiper on the switch assy to feed the horn button - hence 'slip ring'. I can see the broken edges of this piece, with the shroud off the column, and they match the piece that fell out when I first opened it up. Now, is there a special puller for the wheel, or does it come off easily? Hope so... jp |

I'll be honest...I never pulled my wheel off so I cannot give you sound advice. I would think that all you have to do is take the top cover off the wheel( where the airbag sits) and in there would sit the bolts that hold the wheel to the rod itself. I would FIRST try the screws on the rear part of the wheel though and don't forget to unhook you - battery teminals. good luck |

the screws on the back of the air bag pad must come off first, that is what hold sit on. PLEASE....PLEASE dont stick anything up under that pad to free it. i am sure nothing good will come from that. an expert (KYLE) also advised me to do the work when the condition around you would not cause static. also disconnect the battery. good luck mike w |

No air bag involved here, so much less danger. Just the leads for the horn. Will open it up and see what heppens when I loosen the nut holding the wheel on. Let you know soon..... jp |
