Can anyone tell me the pro's and con's about either one of these CDL types and what is the preferred choice and why? Thanks in advance! |

The mechanical is certainly more reliable , provided you set it up right on the truck. The Electric is going to be less intrusive I think and probably a little more "High Tech" looking. Although , there is more that can go wrong with Hi tech... Kyle |

One main difference is visibility. Do you want your conversion visible to the outside world (ie: warranty work). You can use the DSI linkage which is not visible, but it is getting harder to find the donor parts and it can get quite expensive. Also, solenoid is less intrusive into the cabin, but personally I went with mechanical for reliabilty issues. Plus, I made it myself so it was very cheap! |

Greg - What the hell don't you make? Weren't you just looking for a bender so that you can make your own roof rack? Man, I wish I could be half as productive as you are. Maybe if I spent less time surfing this dang web site. Rick |

But Rick, you haven't seen the pile of scrap from stuff that didn't work. The CDL lever is very easy to make. If you don't have access to a welder, it shouldn't cost more than $10 to have someone do it for you. E-mail me off-list and I'll send you a drawing and a word doc with the instructions. It's VERY easy, but it does add a third knob to your console. |

I'll sent the info to Ho and he can add it to the tech section. |

OK. I sent Ho the drawing, instructions, and a photo of how the third knob looks once installed. He'll have it posted soon. |

I've got the solenoid from GBR. I decided to go with it mainly for asthetics. I would rather have a button to push than another lever. It's held up well. I've had the thing for almost a year now and it's held up well to deep snow, mud up the doors, etc. I'm sure to will have it's day, but I'm sure the solenoid can be replaced at just about anytime. |

Greg- Ah, yes. The failed pile of scrap is always a consideration. My wife wanted a Disco so technically it's "our" truck. I've found that as the failed scrap pile grows my unsupervised visitation rights with the Disco start to drop off. I'm very aware of the size of the scrap pile and have taken to burying my failed projects in the neighbor's pasture. Thanks for posting your CDL solution. Rick |

Greg, Nice, simple, somewhat elegant... :-) Thanks for posting it, I was thinking about something like this, but wondered if I was crazy. Now I know at least I'm not the only one. |

Glad I could help. Now go out and build the linkage. You WON'T regret it. |
