I recently "Discovered" that my Discovery I has such a complicated stereo system that the only way to replace anything is to rip it ALL out. Is the ignition system and other wirering just as complicated or could I manage to put in one of those after market alarms that can start your truck from 500 feet? Has anyone else done it? |

Hey William, I have a '95 Disco and I'm in N.Y. and I've taken out the stereo and upgraded the alarm system. I thought the radio sounded like crap and the alarm wasn't much better! I put a alpine head unit and extensive sound system and couldn't be happier with it! Yeah I lost the fancy controls on the dash but I'm more into the SOUND than anything else! As far as the alarm I went with a Clifford Solaris. It's pretty expensive but it offers features nobody else does. For instance, not only can I start my vehicle from a distance but I can also start it from my computer, if I buy the software. I don't need this but someone who can't see there vehicle from there apartment/house might like this. One of the features I do use and like is called Quick Stop. I can press a button on the remote, take the key out, lock the doors with the remote, and the truck will keep running with the doors locked while I run into the store to buy milk or whatever. Like I said I live in NY and theft is really high here so I love this feature! Whatever you chose good luck. |

Who did you get to install it? I live in Texas so I wouldn't be using the same folks, but at least I could call them to get tips for myself or whoever I get to install it. Thanks for the info, it sounds like just what I want. |

Anywhere they sell the alarm they'd be able to install it. I would definately NOT skimp on installation! Go to the "Best" place to buy an alarm system. Do the research, check out the work they've done. Ask people waiting for their cars if they're happy with the work that's been done. I personally like Clifford Alarms but they've been aquired by another company. Vipers are much easier to connect and in my opinion, because of that, are much easier to disconnect! Cliffords are much more labor intensive to connect but are a much better security system. Installers like installing vipers because they're simple and they can do 5-7 vipers in the time it takes to do one clifford. I heard a rumor that the company that bought viper now owns clifford, don't know if it's true or not. But I've also heard the markup on vipers is greater than the markup on clifford. This is just my opinion, I'm not a clifford rep or in anyway affiliated with clifford. Good Luck |
