When the brake switch is faulty, the shifter solenoid doesn't release - and you can't shift out of park. So the question is, has anyone had this problem and replaced the switch? Is it a LR part or can you get one from Murrays, Pep Boys, etc?? |

yes you may do everybody a favor figuring out if there is a generic replacement. I don't think so, although I am sure it is used in a bunch of other vehicles - even cross-referencing would help. peter |

Just a thought, but - have you confirmed that the switch is in fact bad? You'll get the same symptoms when you blow the fuse serving your brake lights. |

funny you ask. just had this problem late last week. went shopping and came out only to find i could not get my truck out of Park. but i knew it was a bad brake switch. so out of sheer luck i got a new one from a local mechanic that does work on rovers, MB, bmw...just about all foreign stuff. he had one. also is the same switch for the '93 and new RR's. but it took all over 1 min. to replace once in my hand. i was just happy to have gotten one. and it was only about 3 blocks from where i was stuck. pretty sure it is a dealer only (genuine) item. for my '96 D1 it was a Lucas part. and today i just got pulled over coming to work for not having covers on my hellas. damn. having a good week already. |

Yup, turned out to be the fuse! Didn't know which one it was, 'coz I don't have a diagram of the fuse locations/ratings!! I changed the switch out any way since it can cause problems. But weirder is the what caused the fuse to blow.... When the right turn signal was on, plus the brake lights, the fuse blew. When I ran the rt. turn signals by themselves, they were dim and then when I stomped the brake pedal, the fuse went out. Fiddled around with the fuse board and reseated the turn signal (flasher) unit and everything's O.K now. The truck had a badly leaking windshield when I bought it, so my guess is that the wet got on the back of the fuse board and has started to cause poor connections (though corrosion). Any thoughts? |
