ok here goes i have a 98 D1 before going to the beach last week i took my truck to a tire place and got my street tires and wheels put back on , usually i do this myself but had no time anyways when i got it back they had put one of my spare tire lugs on the front left wheel. i asked on here if it would damage anything but got little response, on driving it down there about half way i noticed a vibration in the front left and 3 times it pulled to the left as if something like the brake engaged , middle of the week at the beach it was making a grinding noise and the vibrations continued being felt through the floorboard, on the way home it made awfull noises then kinda quietend down with just kind of ticking squelly noises , i then stopped and put in my regular lug that had been ruined and was a stripped on the outsided but i took of the cover and put it on , the noises stopped completely but the vibration was still there, they said it was my bearing in the front left wheel the guy took it apart and there was a riveted long piece i have no idea whats it is but it stuck out when they took the hub apart and they pulled on it and it moved in and out about a half inch or an inch and the mechanic said it shouldn't do that anyways would that one spare tire lug which is at least a 1/4 inch longer than the others and was over tightend have anything to do with this problem , it seems to me there is to many coincidences in this (same day it started , same day the lug was put on , same day bearing went out) this suxxs i hope this is why so that my tire place can pay for it but anyways ask me some questions and i'll tell you more |

You know, the shift key and the period key on your keyboard do have useful purposes. But it sounds like they f*#@$& you over and put something bad in the bearing just to ensure your continued business. |

Sounds like a lot of trouble just to change four tires. Unless they are a NASCAR pit crew, I figure the amount of time you spent waiting on these guys to change your tires/wheels for your street tires/wheels was at least twice what you would have spent to do it yourself. Anyway, I'm hoping you just didn't notice the spare lug nut on the front wheel before heading down the highway. I have heard that overtightening any one lug on an alloy rim will warp the wheel and cause premature wear on the bearing, cv's, whatever. And, of course, the vibration was not helped at all by the balance problem caused by the spare lug nut. Now you have to R&R the hub and check the bearings and cv. At worst you could need a new rim, but I doubt it. Good luck with it! Ron Ward |

another reason to "do it yourself" did they strip your stock lug these jokers may have undertightened some and/or overtightened some leaving your rim to wobble on the hub thank god the wheel stayed on and now you're bearings are fried maybe worse |

The bearing setup is pretty strong on the RR D90 and Disco the stub axels are also pretty stout. And can asorb alot. I can't say wheel wobble for a short term could trash them alone.. How bad were the vibes up front and how many miles did you drive it that way? Iv'e had wheels come off and the bering were still ok hub was dammage wehhel was trash pants were soiled but the bearing were still good When was the last time the bearings were packed. didnt you just do a rotor change? "the guy took it apart and there was a riveted long piece i have no idea whats it is but it stuck out when they took the hub apart and they pulled on it and it moved in and out about a half inch or an inch and the mechanic said it shouldn't do that" Not many parts in the hub that fit what your tire guy found? The parts from the outside in are, dust boot, circlip, 2 thrust washers, the flange hub 6 bolts, outer hub nut, tab washer, inner hub nut, spacer , the outer bearing then race, on the inner all you have is the seal and bearing and race The only thing that sound like a maybee is the tab washer? How out of ballance was the rim and tire? If it was me i would replace the wheel studs if in fact the wheel was wobbling around... Too keep from striping those POS stainless lugs get a set of the soild ones from a older RR Good luck Blake |

never had my bearings packed, i figuired since i bought it off lease about 5 months ago that it was taken care of the guy asked me if i had before and said probably it hadn't ever been done so......... it was driven about 700 miles the vibes were noticeable in the driver and passenger floor boards and were slight at first and after 10 miles or so got worse it was like a train feeling it felt like everytime the wheel turned once it vibrated , it had that pattern. It also had a chirping noise that at times sounded like a grinding noise. When i put the road lug on all the noises quit but the vibes were still there but not as severe. It was Sunday and I was 5 hours from home but i found a place open, the guy said he didn't do that kind of stuff but he looked at it and sounded like he knew what was going on. He didn't have the tools to do it so i let him lock it up. This morning i sent it to the Ford dealership thinking since they owned it now they could fix it. The Service Manager said they didn't have the tools. But knew a shop that could. SO when they let me know something in the morning I'll post it. I'm going to talk to the tire shop that put the tires on (they put them on while i was at work, i didn't wait on them and they aren't even close to a nascar pit crew) do yall think that i could get anything out of them to pay for a new hub or anything.. i don't want to sound like an idiot telling them that one lug caused this but it said don't put it on in plain sight, Oh yeah if there's anyone in Bay Minette, Alabama or near by that know's what their doing or anyone that knows anyone around there that does please leave me a post thanks |

sometimes when lugs are really torqued down uneven you can distort the hub causing the bearing races to be distorted and then they heat up and go bad causing chirping, squeeling and grinding. I'm surprised the beefy LR stuff with its wide bolt pattern would be effected by it ? but some other makes it happens all the time.(mercedees,BMW,ect ect...) |

Maybe I'm missing the point, but aren't the hub and wheels plates just flat rounds plates with nothing in between? Can bolting them tight together really do anything? I'm not trying to argue or anything, just wanna know. Dean |

Musky on some cars that would hold true but with the stub axel and vey true on the3 olde MBZ. With the beefy LR hub i doubt it. Blake, What may have happened is your bearings were on there way out and by leaving the rim in an unbalanced state for 700 miles finished the Job. I am still intrested to see that part they described.. Just off lease cars usally require way more inital maintence than a private party sale. The dealer would not repack unles needed and most people that lease are not going to pay to have it done as routine... I had Discount Tire replace a Rim a Tire and all the Brake Parts and Studs on a 1990 J**P. I had them rotate and later that day while traveling through Az i lost the left rear tire and rim 3 of the lugs were striped clean. I tried for new shorts but they would not go that far. Not a problem for them no hasel, just good bussiness to fix what you potentialy did. I have bought at least 5 sets of tires from them since. I would try to get them to pay up there insured for liability or should be.. I belive the torque is 90 or 95 ft lbs most likely the guy spun the lugs down and forgot to torque them. |

Pensecola, Hope they wrench better than they vote. I dont know was it metal chaff or bearing wear, lets call for a repack... Did you pay by credit card, AMEX is great for resolving those kind of disputes, MC and Visa make you doo the work, Gess thats what the 80 a year is for... |

Not clear to me what wheel types are involved here. Lug nuts for alloys are VERY different from those for steel wheels. The nuts for holding alloy spare wheels on the back are ONLy for holding the spare, not usable for a road wheel. Steel wheels are centred by the lug nuts, alloys are centred by the fit of the casting on the hub - this is why sometimes the alloys are hard to get off because the fit is so good on the hub. I dont recommend driving that far with something vibrating like this, that is wheel related. jp |

it was the alloys that were on it and they put the spare lug on it even though the had to take a tire and wheel off the back where i keep one of them and it has that hard to miss do not use spare lugs on road wheels sticker so you think it is related to that throwing off the balance |

I would think that 2 properly torqued lug nuts would hold the wheel on just fine. I can't see just 1 out of 5 cause a vibration. |

it was the fact that 1 was 1/4" inch or so longer than the others overtightening the wheel even if it was set at the correct torque just because it was longer |

Blake - My first stealership visit with my new to me 1990 range rover was for a bad rear wheel bearing. They charged me $1600 and said they replaced the bearings and the stub axle and all the seals- but couldn't give me my old stub axle for proof. Now I know they just put in a new $20 bearing set and ripped me off casue I can see the scoring on the stub axle from the old bad bearing . SO - you can do this repair yourself if you want or need to or risk having Yahoos rip you off or make it worse. It is not a tough job if you have the manual. I have no confidence in any mechanics anymore and would rather learn and fix it myself if at all possible. Your tire shop messed-up, your bearings would have lasted years without their goof... believe this and sell it to them too!!!I am in B'ham if you are ever up this way. Who's working on the truck in P'scola?? JB |
