Has anyone tried a HID headlight conversion on a Disco? I know there are direct H4 bulb type retrofit kits with remote transformers and electronics that mount under the hood in the $400 to $500 dollar range. Just curious to know if anyone has tried it yet, and what the results were particularly on a remote trail in the dark of night. I have tried the Hella lights on the roof thing with past 4x4's and always had too much glare on the windscreen and hood to be useful most of the time. I have not invested in any lighting mods yet on my Disco, but I am planning to do a little west desert astronomy this summer. (Long dirt roads in the dead of night). So I'm wondering if the money is better spent on the HID since 80% of my driving is on the road. Eric |

While I won't buy any more street cars without Xenon HIDs I wouldn't convert my Disco II to them. There isn't anyway to auto level the headlights on the US models. And I don't think the pattern of the headlight would lend itself well to Xenon HIDs. You might be better off getting some Hella 4000 HIDs mounted on the front if that's what you want. If you're into astronomy then you can also just let your eyes get adjusted to the lower light of your current lights and put the $500 to that new CCD =) |

Ahhh, something I know about... You might try and replace the factory fog and low/ high beam bulbs with super plasma PIAA bulbs; that will provide a pretty good improvment. Also you should look into PIAA H.I.D Driving or Fog lights, they are both great one being a driving, farther out, while the other being a fog, wider. There are also other models PIAA makes which are great such as the 1000s, but if money is no object, and I mean that, then get the H.I.Ds. A pair of PIAA H.I.D drivers will run over 1k, not sure about the fogs though; the 1000s and others run about 150-300 a pair, and bulbs are from about 50. They are all generally small compared to say the Hellas where as they provide the same, if not more amount of light. I have all PIAA in my current car, and I plan on doing the same to my new 02 disco when I pick it up this weekend. They also provide a more natural looking light that brightens the road. Check out http://www.piaa.com |

Thanks for the advice. Is there a big difference in the PIAA standard verses HID? My biggest problem is seeing deer jump out of nowhere onto the road. I had a pair of 100watt halogen Hella lights on my last rig. They improved the distance and flood way over the stock headlights. But mounted on the roof they produced alot of glare. Mounting on the front solves that, but it seems like the roof maybe gives more range? Eric |

There's some electronic wizardry reported in Difflock (check Ottos pages: http://home.halden.net/discovery ) basically switching between 0 and 24 volts 2500 times a second. This is supposed to release more light than Xenon, i.e. some 180W out of a standard bulb. Not roadlegal, but I doubt anyone will make any fuzz about it... Frode |

between the PIAA HIDs and regulars there is a big difference. The HIDs produce a much cleaner brighter more natural looking light, where as the regulars which are still very good are a little less white, and natural looking causing less power. I would mount them on the front, they provide the same length as on top if you used the hellas, and that may have been your problem. they might have been to high for your high speed driving purposes. |
