I just purchased a 1996 Discovery with 80,000 miles a couple weeks ago. This past week it's been extremely squeaky in parking lots, making turns, and while breaking. I called the service guy at Land Rover and he said all Disco's are squeaky due to the high capacity of the breaks. Is this true? Are all disco's squeaky? Or do you think I have a break pad problem or other problem of some sort? |

bed spring squeaky or brake pad squeaky? if it's the brake pads, try hosing them off and learn to live with it. if it's the springs, then don't bother hosing, just learn to live with it! |

I'll bet it's the rear brake pads, right? squeaking at low speed, about 10mph as you come to a stop? |

As I come to a stop and sometimes when I'm starting. I really hear it in parking lots. Should I get them replaced? Or is this how they're always going to sound? |

check the thickness of your rear pads - you can see the pads with the wheels on (you can at least see the outer pad). New pads are only about $80 for a full front & rear set. You can also try anti-rattle anti-squeek goop. |

Change the brakes shoes yourself. It's about a 15 minute job per wheel. |

Thanks so much for the advice! I'll attempt to check the break pads... if it is them nice to hear they're not too pocket breaking. Where can I find the anti-rattle goop? How do you apply it? Is it difficult to do? Too be honest - I'm entirely unmechanically inclined...but am slowly trying to learn. |

My 96 has been doing the same thing. After about 3 sets of pads to try to get rid of the noise, I finally changed out the rotors last Friday. I made a 300 mile trip this past weekend and it is finally quiet. You can find the brake anti-squeek compound at any parts place. I tried the liguid as well as the stick on backings but neither helped. |

it was just the two of us anons in there until a third showed up I just changed rear pads and my squeal diminished significantly - only squeals when dusty (old lockheed pads replaced with new lockheeds). I've used that liquid goop and I think it's just another waste of money. The piston just cuts right through the stuff... |

Most shops will not waranty a brake job unless the rotors are turned or replaced. If they do they must eat alot of hours on rework. I have always seen them squeek no matter what pads used, I have used them all. The one that i see work best are Auto Specialiy Pads and Brembo rotors. Rotors are relativly cheep for the LR its the labor that kills the budget i belive most charge 3.5 hours for a full brake job?. Another area most back yard mech forget is the hub seals if there is grease all aroung the inner knuckel the seals are gone causing the lube to sling onto the rotor and ruin the pad. That will also give you a nasty squeal and at 50 to 60K those seals are toast... There is a realy good anti squeal grease found at most mercedes shops, it is silver and is the best and only compound worth using. I coat the center back of the pads wher the piston hits and the slide tracks on the calipers. Forget the blue spray the pink crap from NAPA |

Do you have a name for the silver MB stuff? My brakes are fine on the road, but after a couple miles of dusty desert trails, they squeal like fingernails on a chalkboard. I find myself adjusting my driving style to compensate. Really, really annoying, and I'd rather not have a $40 part dictate how I run the trails thanks |

I have heard that you should change rotors when you change pads. Is this true? If so how hard is it to change the rotors? Todd |

Todd, Thats a loaded a question, and I am sure I will get flamed for this... All the Pro Mechanics that I know will not warranty a brake job unless the rotors are turned or replaced. A good % of the DIY brake jobs are done incorrectly I here about it all the time. I have to say that just sticking a set of pads in is not a quality job and will not give you the best performance out of your brakes. Discos are heavy vehicles and chew up brakes fast. My Uncle always takes his Brake jobs one step further and does a full system flush 2 bottles per car. One of the better repair and overhaul sources is www.alldata.com it does not cover the older LR but the newer Discos and RR are there. Alldata gives you procedures and Pictures and Part numbers. 24.00 is not that bad and each additional car is 14.00 its a great value IMO Another good source the Rave cd set |
