I am most likely going to move up to a later model D1 soon('99) and was looking for advice on what to do with my '96 D1. The dealer closest to me doesn't sell anything older than '98 so my assumption is they would wholesale it out the back door.
Can I get decent trade value for it (in general) or should I sell it myself? I have no loan and in the past have had better luck with no trade to confuse the haggling. The dealer is about 1.5 hours away and I hate to waste a trip for nothing.

I know it is a general question but any input would be appreciated. Thanks. JMcD

How many miles on it? I doubt you'll get much in trade. My dealer offered me a whopping $6k for my 95 (100K) and proceeded to tell me that the market sets the prices not the dealerships. Seemed kind of funny because they had a 96 with 97K on the lot for $13. Best bet is to run an add in the paper, you'll probably get several tire kickers, but you might just find somebody who wants the rover "prestige" at a price they can afford. You could try ebay as a last resort, before giving it away at the dealership. To make a long story short, I'll probably keep mine until the wheels fall off, it's worth more than $6K to me. There was some speculation on another dweb thread, that if Ford turns the Disco III into an Explorer with a Rover badge, the DI's could become sought after much like D-90's. Doubt it will happen, but it's always nice to dream.

Yeah Bryan, thats kinda what I am afraid of. I went thru that when I got rid of my Tacoma, "It's worth about 15 grand, but I'll sell you this one(same year, model, etc) for 21k." Ended up selling it myself.

My rig is pretty clean, mostly stock, with 82k. Probably be over on the 4sale board soon. 6 grand for a 95 is pretty insulting. Dicks.

I would keep my '96 except I don't want to get a loan for the new one and need this dough for that.
Economics 101. Thanks for your input.

JMcD,
That econ 101 is a bitch and buying/selling cars flat out sucks. I traded in an ES 300 when I bought the disco. The guys where I bought my Lexus were even bigger pricks than Rover. When I bought it they told me "as long as I kept it in good condition it would be worth about $14K, 5 years down the line". They gave me the old "These things have the same engines as a Toyota and they hold their value, regardless of mileage. 5 years later when I went back it was only worth about $5K (Rover gave me $9K). Hell I would have been better off buying 2 Camrys for the price of the ES. I could have driven 1 for 5 years and had a new car still sitting in the garage.

Bryan, That ES had more in common than just the engine with the Camry.

Generally dealers look at any car more than 100k miles as a no-val vehicle. Very few people will want to buy a car with that many miles so it's off to the auction. With few exceptions, what a dealer offeres you on a car with over 100k miles is the same that you could haggle off the new car without the trade (or close to it).

Remember, these guys are there to make money. They have to pay to keep the lights on too. So you're always better off selling on your own. It just boils down to what is your own time worth.

Thats the main reason I quit financing vehicles altogether. A) Every single time I went to trade it in I was so upside down on the f-ing thing that I got screwed. and B) The salesman was always asking me "how much can you afford per month?" And I am like, What does that have to do with the goddamn price of the car? Snakes.

Imagine how much money you could save if you could walk everywhere? I'd be around 2 million bucks better off.

Thanks for the advice. Going to skip the dealer hassle, putting it for sale over on the 4sale board. See how that works. JMcD
