I finally got my film back from my day at the Land Rover Off Road Driving School in Manchester, VT. Unfortunately, only a couple came out as our camera appears to be crapping out. The Videotape came out much better. You can read the whole story in my original topic if you want. --> ../2/4710.html"http://www.nomadcom.com/dave/lr1.jpg" TARGET="_top">http://www.nomadcom.com/dave/lr1.jpg And here we are... stuck. =) The driver's side front wheel was wedged on a ledge that acted as a wheel chock and we rotated (sidelipped) around that point as the other tires dug for traction. The back end is buried in a bank so we couldn't back up. That tree is actually about 2' from the truck... it looks closer in the pictures. We winched the rest of the way up. http://www.nomadcom.com/dave/lr2.jpg At first glance, I didn't think it looked too hard, but it was deceptively tricky, very steep, wet, and lot's of big rock steps that make tough work for a 4k lb. SUV. You really can't tell so much in those pictures. If I hadn't gotten off my line, I would have driven right up it. There was ONE place where I couldn't put my front tire if I wanted to get right up it. This was a hole the size of a Webber Grill in the middle of a 10 ft. wide trail. This is, of course, precisely where I put my front tire... bodging the whole run. I really didn't mind though, as I wanted to see a winch in action. The class wasn't so much about extra-tough trails as it was about proper basics and technique. And they definitely avoid putting their trucks in real peril. I'm sure it looks pretty light to you experienced guys, but for a beginner, it was very entertaining. |

Dave, sounds like you had a great time and learned a lot as well. If you keep doing that, you'll never go wrong! Rover On! |
