We're picking up our new (well to us) 99 D1 tomorrow, and we don't have the money right now for an adventure rack, so we'll have to use the cheesey one that is one there for now. We're building a fence, and every weekend i throw a half dozen or so 12' 2x4's on my current cars Yakima rack. Can the D1 rack handle this? Thanks |

I would think the factory cross bars could take that, especially during city driving from Home Depot to the house. When I bought mine, I put my 15' kayak up there and it was disaster, couldnt handle the weight, so I bought a Thule/Yakima rack that clamps to the gutters. If its too much weight, just fold the seats down and run the extra length out the passenger side window over the mirror, I've dont that with 2x4s in small sedans. |

I wouldn't use the factory rack for hauling 12 2x4's. In my opinion, the racks aren't secure enough for that load. |

Zippy, You might want to look at the photo gallery and research this a little further. You will see Rovers with all sorts of gear on thier racks that exceeds 50 pounds. Go into the archives to find out how much these folks have actually carried on these so called "POS" adventure racks. It was convincing enough for me to buy one. Paul and .02 |

The Safety Device POS overpriced Adventure Roof Rack LRNA only rated at 50Lbs That's just hilarious.... I'll agree, they're not cheap, I know for a fact that there's not much margin on the price from the places you can buy one in the US. But, the gutters are the limiting factor, not a SD rack.... When moving, keep the weight down if possible, but when parked, throw a party up there... -L |

L- the gutters are not the main limiting factor in reguard to the Adventure rack, Its the thin wall tubing no base floor to distribute the cargo weight and small mounting points. The stock mounts tend to bend the rails, If the load was evenly distributed along the inner rail insted of a small outside clamp it would a much stroger product. The weight limiation is true LRNA, I confirmend it a while back with Pioneer Centers. LRNA will not warranty it if a toal load in excess of 50LBS are applied to the rack not just in one location. And i belive the stock Luggage rack is rated at 45. Hum 1100 to carry 5 more pounds, Quote from them "Its a Poser Rack" Now all said and done many have done an outstanding job modifing there racks, Ho's XD's rack is very nice. At what cost? most have over 1k sunk into them not including any Light saucers. I like my POS 600 ARB just fine. There are several custom racks out there that are a much stronger but ther very $$$$$ and most look like plumbers racks to me. |

well... i have had 5 sheets of 5/8 inch ext. grade plywood on my lrna expedition rack and a half dozen 2X4 studs. i did not drive 100 miles with all that up there and i did not wheel, but it seemed to survive. i also believe that the "cover our ass" weight limits are a little low. i have had thule and yakima racks on cars and trucks since '84 and have "overloaded" them for that entire time. just ask yourself how much, how far, and how hard you will use that rack and make a best judgement call. mike |

Dont get my quotes wrong Mike, There the limits set by LRNA. And fall into the same catagory as most of there other coppouts. Static load displacement is more forgiving than 100 to 150lbs of unevenly distributed cargo slamming around on a dirt road @ 30 to 50 mph. Funny on the Thule racks i had 10 soild wood doors stack on those on time, On top of my old Mercedes 280sl... |

I have the "Adventure" rack (Safety devices calls it the highlander I think). I put 480 pounds of IKEA stuff (Very handy of them to label all the boxes with detailed weights) on the roof in Woodbridge and drove back to Alexandria VA. We drove a few miles on I95 and then took Route 1 the rest of the way back. The total distance is about 20 miles. I actually did not notice any handling difference. I had the factory springs and dampers at that time. I have hauled fence, lumber, christmas trees, a water heater. My nerve gives out before the rack. -jeff |

Good choice (though doesn't fit the line like adventure rack) is Wilderness Rack by Garvin. One can get the basic rack (4'6" x 7' x 6") and mounting hardware for around $450. No floor kit needed as better set up is to cover entire floor area with single piece of house-siding grade plywood. This works very well when covered with artificial turf (yes, believe it or not) as it provides a high-friction surface so gear doesn't slide around as much. Cut a few holes down the midline to mount lashing webbing to the rack underneath and you have one fine looking, high loading rack (can put chairs, tents, BBQ, etc on top if you want). Friend of mine has same setup and his loaded 300-400 lbs of gear with NO problem. Total cost about $500 - $525 (new) and about 2-3 hrs assembly time. |

hey dee, i was not trying to call anyone out. i think most rover owners in general (at least the ones here) do more with our trucks than the manufactures "suggest." i was just suggesting that whatever is bought, take their limits with a legal grain of salt and use best judgement. today i had two 45 pound kayaks and my 160 pound ass up there. not a creak or groan (of course driving from up there was hard. but you gotta love the feel of the wind through your hair)! and correct placement and securing is the success of any rack-car-cargo situation. mike |

I'll second that on the Garvin Wilderness rack. I've had 400 pounds on mine plus my 180 pounds with no problems on a Disco II. It was top heavy and you need to be careful in the turns but the rack and roof held up well. I also normally run with two kayaks (about 45# each) and have had 3 total up there. For the record Land Rover says no more than 100 pounds on the roof of the Disco II. |

Mike, No worries on that, I got a chuckle out of it when the Parts Manger told that to me. I had an old POS Confer Roof rack for many years it worked fine up untill the plywood floor decided to rip of while i was on I5, lucky it was a Sunday morning. Now Ive got an ARB. nice rack PIA to get.. Soon to be released is my on rack system.. |

hey bw... sorry for the delay in getting back to you...the girlfriend was down from montreal this weekend and she gets strangely angry when i spend our time on the computer...;) it is the full split-level rack. i have pretty good faith in it because it has four attachment points on each side. i have loaded the crap out of a thule and yak and they are four attachment points for the entire system. but, as has been noted in this subject several times, i try to load smart when i load. i have heard the arb rack is a hell of a good rack, but i rolled the cost of the lrna rack into the financing of the car and they offered a 3 year warrenty for the rack if i bought it at the time of purchase. so i don't necessarly think it is the best rack our there, but i don't think it is a pos either...it will do quite a bit, you just have to know it's limits and yours. just like anything else... |

Zippy, There is another option. I recently had to carry a Canoe up top and wanted to fit my Yakima's but gave up as the towers even with Hi Rise adaptors aren't tall enough. So I bought the Low Riders that clamp to the ractory Rails and allow you to run 48", 56" or 66" Bars. THe 48" is REALLY tight and you cant use the caps on the end so I'd use longer bars. But they work great. The Factory Rails are very strong, but the Factory Cross Bars SUCK. With this setup the Canoe carried very well as well as the Plywood and 2x4's I carried a few days later. Cost was $120 for the Low RIder adaptors and I used my old Cross Bars. Works like a champ. l8r TOdd |

Thought about using the Yakima products. I already have a setup for my last car, but it only has the 48" cross bars. Not sure if i want ot spend the money on a rack that i might not keep for to long. I really want a full length roof rack. And i really want a tent setup to go up there as well. Thanks for hte info though. |

I plan to get the Adventure Rack or similar full length rack as well. But when I do I may still want the ability to put Cross bars up there occasionally and if I do I can use these new Yakima Adapters to put Cross bars up there to carry Canoe's, etc. Just a thought Todd |

you can fit yak or thule bars on the expedition rack from rover using yakima "snap arounds." but the rover rack is slightly smaller in size, so i just cut some bicycle inner tube and wrapped around the rover rack to take up the extra space. i have had both racks so i have a frankinstien's monster of bike mounts, kayak mounts, canoe mounts and a home made hi-lift mount from thule and yakima up there. |

If you guys want a Big Flat platform for a tent or other load, take a look at the snowy pics of my Disco in the gallery. That orange sheet is really hog nursery flooring that's u-bolted to two sets of Thule cross bars and "super hi foot" mounts. It worked great but looked goofy and has been replaced with an O.E. Adventure rack (as seen in the Utah pics). |
