Thanks all for the help yesterday, especially Kyle and Dee. I flushed the radiator today and got the large piece out and found some of the tiny plastic pieces up around the t-stat just as anticipated. I'm waiting around for the engine to cool down now so I can top her up and take off down the road. I noticed however that when it got up to operating temp, without driving around, I never got hot air out of the heater. All I got was cold air. Is it possible to have managed to screw the heating system up by messing with the t-stat? I also left her on last night, with the engine off, and heat on, and forgot about it for an hour or so. Would that have screwed up the heater? Just more curious questions from yours truly Mark |

When I flushed my radiator last month, Same thing happened. I had an air pocket in there someplace. If i recall, I let it cool, disconnected the top hose, released the thermostat, squeezed the bottom hose thourghouly,(to slosh coolant around in the block and radiator) reconnect, and top it off SLOWLY through the filler hole in the radiator (not the resivior), and with the fill plug removed, squeeze both top and lower hoses to move air bubbles around and to the top of radiator, Try it, I think I was lucky to have to do it just once. ps Make sure the thermostat is not backwards don't know if it hurt the heater, in theory, I can't see it being a problem... Glad it worked out, I was just going to say you need to burb it like a baby, just like Steve did. It may take a few tries, I normally burp it through the filler plug 2 to 3 times. Also keep an eye on your temp guage it usualy freeks out if there is alot of air in the system.. Sales plug i have a bunch of the brass plugs to replace the POS plastic if any ones intrested.. |

Yeah Dee, I heard today you had those damned brass ones, instead of the POS plastic jobbers. I sure could of used one of those yesterday in that hot freaking parking lot, where the plastic one busted off... |

Funny, i was sourcing those plugs awile back and pulled mine to check the fit and dam if the POS didnt start to peal the thread. Now explain how a world class expedition vehicle has a plastic plug in the raditor. There must be a stupid division at LR that dreams up way to fuck up a good design . Must be where they exile old Ford employees.. |

No need to remove the top hose, 1: protecting your hand and arm, remove expansion tank cap to release pressure 2: then remove plastic plug. run engine with heater on and as the air comes out, fill via the expansion tank with correctly pre mixed antifreeze. Have a couple of liters handy. Chris Browne |

If you replace the plastic plug and O ring every time you flush the fluid (you have to remove it anyway) you shouldnt have a problem with them breaking. Thats what I do because the very first time I removed the plug - it broke. Go figure... |

Brass sounds sooo much more eco-friendly... did I just say that as green coolant spilled out all over my driveway today? Fix it and forget it is a good motto though, and those POS plastic things sure don't seem to fit that bill. |

Dear all, I didn't see the orginal message, but after reading this series, I have a sugestion to add to what has already been said. When you have the thermostat out, either for replacement or to eliminate air pockets in the system. Drill a hole in the thermostat base plate so it can vent air out of the system. I use a 3/32" to 1/8" bit. It doesn't bypass enough fluid to cause a problem but prevents air pockets in the cooling system. In fact, Stant, a theromastat manfacturer, predrills many of the theromastats that they sell. I've used this on my personal vehicles and on the equipment at work with good results. Just my .02 Steve |

I hate those cheap-ass plastic radiator caps!!! Do yourself a favor and get a brass one. I think Rover Accessories sells the solid brass caps for @ $15. |

Steve: The stock thermostat has a "Jiggle Pin" that is essentially a little ball of brass with a pin sitcking out of it that allows what you decribed. I also drill my thermostats to allow me to use $2.50 Stant thermostats, rather than the $10 Beck-Arnley. Of course, being a CB, I also use SB Chevy gaskets! |
