For the 60k service, I believe an item is to check and grease the driveline. What type of grease should I use, And is there more then one grease nipple? Thanks in advance? Matt |

If its the prop-shaft ...multi-purpose lithium based grease to NLGI-2. Grease nipples at each end of each prop-shaft. |

Mr. UK: Now it is my turn to be critical of your post. There are more grease nipples on these trucks than just the two, and in my opinion, which I know you will shoot down, they can be more critical. Matt: The universal joints at the front and rear of the front driveshaft need to be greased. There is also a sliding splined shaft in the front that is very critical to be greased (I do it every oil change at ~3,000 miles). Failure to grease the sliding splined shaft will result in driveline vbies with or with out lift-guaranteed. In the rear, you only have a universal joint at the front. The rear driveshaft also has a sliding joint, however I have not noticed it to be as critical, no doubt due to the more reasonable angles encountered on the rear-simple trig and geometry. In the event that you have a Disco II, you have a CV (actually double cardon) joint in front, with a single universal joint. I don't believe the CV joint is greaseable, leading to early failures. Also, depending upon the point of production cycle your vehicle was made (if a DII), you may either have a two-u-joint rear driveshaft, or one with the much maligned roto-flex at the rear. Either way, a quick visual inspection will reveal what you need to grease. While you're at it, don't forget to check swivel ball fluid levels and diff levels (probably a good idea to change if not changed sooner). Now for the rest of the story. I tried to swap my front u-joints last December and as a result of the seven previous owners of my truck not having greased the front driveshaft spline, I ended up buying and breaking a twelve-ton hydraulic press to separate the two halves of the front driveshaft. As a result, I now crusade against insufficient lubrication of driveshafts and universal joints. Go forth and grease! peace, paul |

Does anyone know what size the grease nipples are? I was lubing my U-joint and my coupling on my grease gun would not let go of the nipple, and when I pried it off the nipple broke off. I can't find one at AutoZone that fits right. |

They seem to be an imperial thread, rather than metric. Size and thread pitch-tiny! They are threaded, rather than pressed in. Paul |

Hi Paul. I wrote ...grease NIPPLES at the end of EACH prop shaft. Who mentioned two nipples or just one prop shaft? Hi Scott. If the gun fits the nipple then the gun will come off. Just keep it straight and pull. Lever the gun and the nipple will snap. |

Just get under there and grease every nipple you can find, then get out, roll the car about a foot, put back in park, and grease any other nipples that now face you. As for the fitting, it seems to be a standard size. I didnt have any problems with my grease gun. Its also helpful if you have a flexible rubber hose extension and not a long solid one. This isnt brain science and its pretty obvious. |
