Since the light on the dash indicating the center diff is locked does not come on when the diff lock lever is moved to the left in hi or lo (hi and lo range functioning normally) how can I test to see if the diff lock is in fact functioning? I had a seal replaced on the t-case last month and went wheeling today for the first time since and noticed that the diff lock light didn't come on. Ron Ward |

On my '96 Ron when I engage the dif lock I can hear a (small) 'clunk'. The better way to tell if it is working is to jack up the rear of the truck and put it in gear(holding foot on brake, with no children or small animals in harms way). On mine the truck will not move if the dif-lock is not engaged. If the dif-lock is engaged the truck will surge or try to creep forward. Obviously be careful, don't get carried away with the throttle. Perhaps the shop forgot to install the small clips that connect the linkage to the T-case? The hi-lo linkage is completely seperate from the dif lock linkage. I would crawl under the truck and look up with a flashlight to see if the linkage is intact. Good Luck JMcD |

I'll give that a try tomorrow. I'll be pissed if the guy (LR technician) didn't connect the CDL linkage afterall.... Ron Ward |

Ron - did you ever figure out why your truck was overheating today? |

An easy test to see if the CDL is engaging is to engage the CDL in 4 low and turn the steering wheel hard to the right. When you move forward, you should feel the front and rear wheels working against each other. You may even get some wheel slippage. The rear wheels will be trying to push the front end straight forward. Best to do it in loose dirt rather than in a parking lot. Thanks, Mike B. |

the diff lock light in the dash has a electrcal swith in the t-box.it has a detent ball that drops when the shifter is moved to diff lock that grounds and turns the light on.this has no affect on if the diff lock is working or not.it is very common for the light switch to be out off adjustment or the switch may be bad.the best way i have found to see if is in diff lock is same as above drive on blacktop with diff lock on and make a sharp turn.you will know right away if it is in or not. |

Will, I think it just got hot running up those 45 degree hills, and then stopping to let Rob get out of the way. Just too dang hot. It cooled off and ran fine the rest of the day. I jacked up the rear and tested the diff lock. It works fine (the shifter may be a bit out of adjustment) but the dash indicator light does not work. I don't even know where to start looking for that... Ron |

Top of t-case, behind the engage lever is where the plug is. Reach up there and try to feel if it is unplugged. JMcD |
