My transfer case has whined since I brought the truck. It is most noticable at about 15-30 MPH. What causes this noise? I added a Lucas oil additive but it really didnt do much to silence the noise. Is it bearing related? I dont know much on this topic, so please help me. Thanks

Rick

The gears are straight cut. The sound your hearing is them meshing together. LR tells me the noise is normal and that all Rovers have the t-case whine. Some are louder than others. Mine is very loud and have been told by the dealer that they will change it at my 7500 mile check up if i wanted it. They say there is no need to worry nothing is going to break or anything in the t-box and that the gears are ok. Its just that the Straight cut gears are not matched and some run tighter together then others. The tighter the are the louder the whine. Hope this helps. But if its botjhering you that bad i`d call your LR dealer and ask them to replace it. Tell them the noise is giveing you a head ache, because i`m sure it is.

If you are talking about a D2, check to make sure your center diff lock in not engaged. I've heard that quite a few left the factory with it engaged.

In a parking lot, turn your wheels all the way to the right. If your CDL is engaged, it will fell tight when you go forward, like the wheels are working against each other. You may even get some wheel slippage. If it's not engaged, it will turn just like any other SUV.

To quiet your transfer case, maybe try Lucas climing oil (used by most truckers) or try synthetic oil.

Thanks,
Mike B.

My t-case started to whine after only 6700 miles. LR replaced the entire thing saying that it was going bad.

going bad. Ha. its really funny because you basically have to run it with no oil for a long time or do something really dumb to kill one. Sure they get noisey but they are so strong that they are next to impossible to actually kill without wanton abuse or neglect.

My truck is a 96 DI. I bought it with about 48,000 miles and now with about 58,000 on it the T-case still whines.

Thanks for all the info

I have seen the LUCAS climbing oil on display at my local NAPA, it looks pretty slick (bad pun!) have you guys had success with it?

TIA!

I like the whine. I tell people it is my warp drive kicking in.

Cheers,

Kennith :)

Mike if its a D2 and the CDL is locked the CDL light would be on all the time.
