Hi,

My '98 Disco started having a burning smell from the Rear-Left of the vehicle. The wheel was also unusually warm. My wife took it for a short drive (about 40 miles) this afternoon (not a particularly warm day, about 65) and the smell started on about the last 10 miles of the journey. I took it out for a 2 mile drive but it didn't repeat itself. She then took it out to the grocery store (1/4 mile) and it did it again.

Not sure where to start investigating this one. The Rear Left did not appear to have any similar smell or symptoms.

Sticking brkae caliper would be my first guess. Siezed wheel bearing would be #2

Since the problem is only happening when your wife is driving, are you sure she is releasing the parking brake the whole way?

The parking brake is not on the rear axle.

I know that. I just figured if he didn't know exactly where the problem was that this was a possibility.

Parking brake was definitely off, and smell is definitely coming from rear-left wheel.

I assume that the best way to identify if it is the brake caliper would be to jack up the rear wheel and verify brake operation when in neutral?

Is there a particular lubricant which is designed for brake calipers?

Thanks,

Phillip

check for rear stub axle leaking and putting gear oil on the rotor.also the calipers are fixed caliper not sliding caliper.the calipers do not move, only the pistons inside the caliper so there is no lub for them.

no one asked but what type of smell, rubber, oil, grass (no not the cannbis kind) your exhaust is in that area, i had a smell from there as well and i traced it to crap being trown up on the pipe. IMHOFWIW

Mike,

Not sure how to describe the smell. I would guess that it is probably rubber or oil, or at least something with a nasty odor. Probbaly the most important thing to note, though, is the heat that was on that wheel rim and not on any of the others.

Doesn't appear to be any leaking oil around that area, but then ... maybe there is no oil there to leak!

Car needs inspecting (state sticker tag) so I guess I'll ask the mechanic to take a look while he has it up on the lift.

Any other ideas are, of course, appreciated.

Thanks,

Phillip
