This week my stock front bumper and the radiator grill fell victim to a large piece of retread from a semi (I am amazed at the damage a piece of rubber at 70 MPH can do). I don't want to replace the stock bumper with another plastic POS, and am thinking about going with an ARB. My D2 suspension is stock, but I put on some Wrangler MTR's a couple of weeks ago (awesome tires!!). Due to height limits in the parking garage that I must use, I can't lift the truck very much at all, or I will be scraping the rails off the top. My questions about the ARB are these: 1) will I need to go to heavy duty springs (and should I get the LR ones?) How much if any lift will HD springs give? 2) how hard is it to install the bumper myself? I can't find anyone in the OKC area that has installed one on a D2 and dealt with the crush cans. I have installed a CD changer and a few other things myself, so I have basic tools but nothing specialized. I have read many of the posts regarding rotational problems with the ARB, but with the 2-3 trips a year to CO that I get to take, it should be more than adequate for me.

The ARB should be easy enough to install yourself. You'll need some basic tools and a long drill bit to drill one additional bolt on each frame horn. I would get another person to help you lift the bumper into place. If you go with $G you may need more in the way of tools just to get the thing to fit. And I'm not talking about cutting the grill to fit the winch if you go with one. I can't speak for other bumpers since I've only installed my ARB and helped a friend install his $G on Series 2 Disco's.

As for ride height and springs, you will need new springs with the bumper. I think some people have done just stock springs with the ARB and no winch but I've found the ride to be "mushy" and I would think the stock springs would eventually sag. You can go with the Land Rover heavy duty springs and still maintain the stock ride height. I have a set of LR HD springs I used for about 7,000 miles with an ARB and winch until I moved to the OME HD's when OME finally introduced them. The OME HD's will give you about 1 1/2" lift (at most) with an ARB and Winch. Without the winch you may get about 2" but it will settle a little.

If you dont want any lift...just get the LR HD's in the front. a friend did this when he got his SG bumper and it sat right about stock height.

Two disco I D/S fronts should put you level in front.

Contact John at Rover Tym and tell him what you're doing. He can provide springs to support the added weight with no change in ride height.
