I am in the process of installing my Disco 1 CDL linkage.

I'm getting ready to bolt everything back together, but I wanted to verify a couple of things.

1) Does the CDL indicator take a while to turn on and off after shifting the linkage? On mine, the indicator light does not turn off until after I straighten out or back up a few feet. Is this normal?

2) Is it just me or is the metal piece that connects the transfer case linkage to the transfer case activator lever really weak? When I shift from Hi to Lo, it "feels" very spongy and imprecise, although the transfer case shifts normally

Anyhow, thanks for the responses. I hope that I got the CDL and transfer linkages adjusted properly and I hope that bolting everything together goes smoothly!

1) This is normal and good practice to drive in reverse for 20-30 feet after unlocking the CDL. This is just ensure that your CDL is disengaged. Even if the light shows that you're not engaged.

2) this is also a "normal" feel.

Thanks!

One more question now that I've got everything assembled...

Is there anything that can be done about the increased noise? I'm not sure if this is the case with other Disco 2s fitted with a Disco 1 linkage, but I'm getting a lot more noise coming up from under the car through the center console where the new linkage is. Can this be insulated?

Many have reported this but I've not noticed any change in noise (might be due to the noise from my roof rack that I don't notice the CDL noise). The old Disco II linkage was never directly connected to the x-fer case like the Disco I linkage is. The rubber gasket helps dampen some that noise but I'm sure some of the vibrations transfer into the cabin.

My question is whether or not when LR will have part numbers for the genuine "Disco2" CDL linkages for the 2003 Disco2s. I think I will have a "new" Disco2 linkage installed at some point when the 2003 Disco2 CDL parts become available.

I'm sure they will... the question will be will the 2003 REALLY have the CDL (I'll believe it when I see it) and if so will they use the same transfer case. If not then the new linkage may not fit. My guess is that they will go with a solenoid version to keep noise down at the cost of dependability.

Works for me. I'm not a huge fan of the increased road noise.

Neither am I but in a Disco I think it just helps hide all the sceaks and rattles. Going from my 540i to the Disco used to be like going from well... a german car to a british one. With all the road noise from the tires and roof rack it's now one constant hum and it sure beats the sqeaky back door and rattles in the dash plus I don't even notice the CDL. :)

I felt the same way for a couple of days after the switch, but I don't really notice it anymore... Just make sure to stuff as much insulation as possible around the CDL. If you find that resting your hand on the cdl "removed" the sound, then you are out of luck really. That is the nature of the Mech CDL...

Well, according to some pictures I saw at www.disco2.com it appears that the CDL mechanism in the 2003 Disco2 is the same as the Disco 1 linkage. My guess is that they are going to have some sort of sound insulation under the CDL to at least filter some of the noise. The Disco 2 is too plush for soccer moms to have to put up with the noise! :)

Maybe if I can get my hands on the 2003 parts I can get under there again and install some soundproofing materials.

Thanks for the responses. It's nice to know that what I'm hearing is normal and I didn't screw up too badly.

Al-

Looks like you're right. I'll post pictures later, but the 2003 Disco 2 will have CDL as an option (stock Disco 2s will NOT have have CDL), and the activating mechanism is a solenoid housed in a hole in the transfer case shifter lever.

I suppose in keeping with tradition, the CDL solenoid appears to be activated by pushing the transfer case shifter to the left, ala Disco 1. This information is taken from a 2003 owner's manual.

And the cost of the CDL option in the UK will be 260 GBP, or approximately $400 US. I don't know if the option price will be the same elsewhere.

At approx 1/4 of the price, I'll have to live with my "noisy" DI linkage. The virtual savings of $300 I'll put in my winch fund.... hehehehe

I'm not afraid of technology (if you can call a solenoid is very technical) but I would much rather have a mechanical connection. I guess I should just be happy they're offering it again but it should be standard and not an option.

I too prefer the mechanical over solenoid.

Still, I am very excited that LR is the only manufacturer I can think of that has actually tried to do things to appease the off road crowd. It is good to see they are addressing thier root audience.
