Hey Guys... Hope everyone is doing fine. I have just came back from a nice offroading session in the Disco, and will be posting the pictures soon. Anyhow, I purchased a 2002 Nissan Patrol in Saudi (many reasons for not going LR unfortunately), and was wondering if I could safely install a non-airbag compatable ARB winch bumper on it, given the fact that there is a driver's side airbag installed?... I know that this is the Discoweb, but this is my net-home, and I do not know of any other good boards, so if you can advise me, I'd be much appreciative. Cheers, Nadim |

Nadim, I can't tell you anything about fit or finish, but I can tell you how the discovery airbags function, as the Nissan version probably works off of the same principal. I am just putting this out, and I strongly suggest you look into the Nissan airbag functions before you proceed. Airbags on the discovery deploy when a signal is sent from a sensor mounted to the top of the transmission. The sensor detects rapid decelleration, such as that encountered in a collision. Airbag compatible bumpers include crush cans, to slow decelleration in minor parking lot impacts and little other bumps you may encounter. Non airbag compatible bumpers bolt directly to the frame rails. This creates an immediate decelleration to zero, with no absorbsion of the speed of impact by crush cans, making the airbags slightly more likely to deploy in minor collisions. Off road, this shouldn't be an issue, as was discussed in a previous thread. If the vehicle is driven mostly on the road, and you may sell it in the future , it's a toss up. It depends on how you trust your driving skills. If the airbag blows, most areas give the vehicle a salvage title, some don't, but it will at least be on the record for the life of the car, SIGNIFICANTLY reducing the resale value. My discovery II is getting a non airbag bumper, but then, it is constantly beaten around off road, and I am not going to sell it. If you have an off road vehicle already, and you are happy with it, I wouldn't bother. Just put that ARB on the trail truck instead. However, if you intend to make the Patrol your trail truck, and you intend to keep it... I am sure this post will fill with a wealth of both informed and uninformed opinions soon, so before you take any advise, please check with a dealer or something to explore the nuances of your SRS system. Cheers, and shoot me a mail if you need anything else, Kennith |
