I was under the impression that my disco was a submarine and attempted a water crossing without "walking" it first.

water

It turns out to be about 2 ft of water and about a foot and a half of real soft mud underneath. Long story short, I rode a flatbed tow truck to my house. After drying out all the electrical connections [and about 2 cans of those spray "methel" in the intake] it finally started the next day. Problem is, I now have a service engine light on and the engine sounds worst than my lawn mower [running very rough and sputters with intermitent banging and knocking]. Please give me an idea as to what I should look out for next. Thanks!

Could be a dirty MAF sensor. Sounds exactly like mine when a piece of foam filter got stuck around the sensor once. There's some kind of spray (carburettor cleaner?) that I used to clean it another time, and that helped - perhaps someone else could recommend.

Another thing pull each plug lead out (one at a time) and see if there is any difference in running (there SHOULD be). If not, then that plug is not firing so check the leads and ignition.

Sorry I could only salvage a few tools from the 'flying toolbox' - I'll keep them safe till next time.:)

Did you pull the plugs and shoot the water out? JUst a tought, my apologies, as I do not have a ton of experience yet.

The check engine light could be due to bad O2 sensor which often goes bad if water gets into the engine. IF you have a 95 disco, look under the passenger seat and see what code is displayed. If code 44 is present = bad o2 sensor. Disco's cut off quickly when water gets in. The air box has many holes to let water and steam in...get a snorkel and seal the box.

It's actually the "service engine" light that's on [amber]. Where would the display be in a 99D1, I have my cd changer under the pass seat. How does it look like?

Dean, thanks again for helping me out last Saturday man! That's really funny with the flying tool box [lol ] I also have your handheld CB and your glasses. I didn't go to work today in an attempt to get it running smoothly.

That is not deep enough to get to the intake if you did not go in fast.
I have been in much deeper water (my gallery) and sometimes I have been able to cross without a problem.
Anyways, It seems to me that you have an electrical problem. Make sure that all the sensors are indeed clean, and that the airflow meter is well adjusted.
Its is safer however to unscrew a sparkplug and check for water calcifications on the head. Since you have already fired the engine up, there will be no trace of liquid water.
I bet it is an electrical thing.
Tell us more details to help you out...

Nadim,

Yes, I did see your disco in a "down-periscope" state . In a cold start, it takes several cranks to get it running and when you do, the whole engine bay shakes and you can hear the engine sputters and make really loud noises. After about 5-10 minutes, the idle smooths out to about 650-700 rpms and the truck begins to sound normal with the exception of a few intermittent banging and popping that seems to be coming out of the air filter box. Although, when you attempt to drive it, it still sputters and will not go more than 20 mph. I can't even get it to rev to 2K rpms. I will try cleaning the sensors today. Ok, here's a dumb question, where do you find the oxygen sensor?

Thanks!

What you are describing is pointing to the Airflow meter. Its that part between the airbox and the engine manifold. Try getting another one and put it in. regulate the engine and try it, if all the shakes and rattles are gone, buy it. If not then start cleaning all those things!

By the way, just for the record, after I was pulled out of the "down-periscope" dive, I dismantled 50% of the engine, and fixed up everything, and drove under my own power!

Nadim, thanks for the tips. I will try those today. Alyssa, the truck has 57k. Unfortunately, it's past it's warranty. :( Thanks!

I was just seeing if you happened to coincidentally be around 52,500, which would explain the light. But of course not. That would be too easy.

Nadim,

I'm looking at your gallery and all I see is desert, no water.

Can you put up a link?

Yeah...that's Nadim's "down-periscope" moment.

He's probably way past asleep this time, it's probably the wee hours of the morning in the middle east.

Hey Guys,

I just received some parts from Nathan all 60K service related. (Plug wires, oil filters, trans filter kit, etc.) I will attempt to wrench on the truck today and hopefully these new parts, specifically the plug wires, will make it run better. It's now running somewhat decent initially but it's still rough and can not idle. Please help me answer some of these questions:

1. What should I use to clean the MAF? I tried spraying carb cleaner on a lint free cloth and wiped the insides of it and my mechanic neighbor says that's not good. (Apparently the MAF is very sensitive to chemicals - which is also what I read on the archives about the MAF)

2. If I screwed up the MAF, how much is it to replace? :(

3. I read so much posts in the archives pointing to some sort of display under the seat that would tell you fault codes... I have a 99D1, and I looked under the driver's and passenger's seat and couldn't find this darn display. (I have a CD changer under the passenger seat)

Thanks!

Hey Glenn,

When I spoke to Adrian he mentioned that you guys were going to either Wurtsburo or the Barrens. He didn't mention Atlantis as an option! LOL, sorry I couldn't help it. I believe on a '99 you have to hook up the computer to a diagnostic type apparatis. I can't believe somebody else hasn't chimed in about this. I believe it's a OBD II diagnostic something or other. I think someone sells the software to hook up to a laptop.

I've been sooo busy at work I couldn't even get back to you guys. I was sooo jealous that you guys were going and I wasn't. Sorry about not getting back to ya. Where'd you wind up going? Hope the family is well and I'm sure the Disco will be fine just needs some time to "Air Out".

Hey guys...

Sorry for not being present too much, but new job/new office/new country isn't too easy...

Anyways, to be frank with you, my Disco has 112,000 KM on it ('92 model) and most of these kms were on the roughest tracks in the Lebanon. The thing that keeps it going (knock on wood)is the HUGE amount of care put into it. I mean, since its getting bashed left, right and center, it aught to be cared for as well.

The "down periscope" even was very scary and I regret ever second for not checking the depth. However, it has enabled me to locate objects in more waterproof areas, and modify things in a more user friendly manner.

Remember, without water, we'd be dead (my explanation to my mum!)

Cheers

Nadim,

That's so true about Maintenance and taking care of your rigs. Specially if you bashed it "left, right and center" I too regret it big time that I didn't "walk" the crossing first. Although it wasn't deep at all,(I made a couple of those before) i think I got a little too happy with the gas pedal and splashed water all over the engine bay.

Now that I'm off the warranty, I'm starting to get to know my truck intimately

**John, it was nice to hear from you! Yes, too bad you weren't able to make it... "Byrne - the two-teeth gasoline boy" would've been helpful at that time... hehehe
