Hi, I just bought a 2001 discovery base model with 10000 miles. I would like to add an in dash cd player and upgrade the sound with speakers, a subwoofer, and an amp? As it only comes with 6 speakers and an alpine tape player, what models work as far as in dash cd players and has anyone replaced the speakers with better sounding ones? Are there any cd players that fit perfectly in the dash? What about mp3 players? Please describe your systems and approximate cost. Any information is greatly appreciated. Thanks. John |

John - You say "only" 6 speakers. 6 speakers are plenty and can even be overkill (the most important speakers are in the front, all the rear speakers are only used for fill). I have a nearly competition level system in my Disco and use only 4 speakers (2 way components in the front and coaxials in the rear). My head unit is an Empeg (now called RioCar) MP3 player. It is basically a small computer running linux that plays MP3 or WMA music from its internal hard drive. My amp is a 400 watt (50x4) 4 channel professional level Diamond Audio unit stealth installed behind the trim panels in the rear (if your going to do this the amp must have internal fans). One of the single most important additions to your system is a seperate subwoofer. My sub is installed in the rear in a custom fiberglass enclosure that houses a single 8" Bazooka sub. All my speakers were upgraded to the best speakers I could get for my budget. Remember, your system will only sound as good as your speakers can reproduce it. Since my head unit doesn't have an AM/FM tuner I also installed an Alpine XM radio (mounted in the ceiling console). The system was professionally installed and ran in neighborhood of $4,000. While you can get a great system for much less than this, I like my music and tend to go a little overboard. Remember, everthing must be securely bolted down if you ever plan to take your Disco off-road. Good luck on your new system and let us know how it turns out. |

The 2001 SD is what you have sir. A not so well known fact is that 2001 is the only year that Phillips speakers were used in the premium sound system, which you do not have. I have the Phillips 12 speaker system in my 01 SE, and it flat out kicks ass. I know their componants work in the car, so you may want to check them out. The 2002 Discoverys have an adapter that recesses the dash slot to neatly fit a standard size head unit. You may be able to order this piece at a dealer, or have one made. You can see it on 02 models with the premium audio and navigation system. This is probably the best bet, aside from finding a trashed disco on britishrecycling.com or in a junk yard and ripping the phillips or HK system out. You might also start by finding one of the local shops that cater to those tricked out hondas and such, asking some of the frequenters what they think. Some of those guys know more about that stuff than geese know about water. Of course, theres plenty more out there that I don't know much about, like Phoenix gold, whose show car used to be a Disco I. I hope more people answer to this post, because I as well am interested in hearing about what's out there. Cheers, Kennith |

I've got a 2001 SD, and I replaced all of the audio components in my truck. Pioneer Premier CD deck Planet Audio 5 channel 700W amp mounted in the left rear storage bin Diamond Audio 6" coax front and rear Diamond Audio component tweeters Kicker 10 sub in a stock box with tan carpet Flat out kicks ass. No need for more than 6 speakers in my Disco. |

John i also have a 2001 DII and have installed an aftermarket head unit into it. don't be troubled by the stranged shaped factory head because once removed any single DIN unit will fit. the only problem you might run into is the location of a factory wiring harnes. i was unable to find one so i was forced to cut the factory plugs and figure out what was what. if you plan on installing it yourself just ask and i will send you the wiring color scheme. |

Oh yeah, one more thing. I just ordered a trim piece from the 2002 with the HK system that covers the screws below the DIN socket. Looks like a factory install now. |
